Finally made it out to Black Creek this weekend. I hate out and back courses, but this was nice. Missed the early AM rain only to get the later AM rain.

The gravel track certainly makes the Xero huaraches easier to run in. I like trying to run in them once a month or so. Did my favorite workout from the 80/20 book: long run with speed play. 12 miles in zone 2, but sprinkle in 10 x .25 mile zone 3 fartleks. I was the only idiot out there.

When are they going to run that course out to 5 Mile Creek? The map said it went there, but it definitely ended well before there.

Rock on! They have the course all the way out to 5 Mile Creek btw... you just have to know where to turn and what to do, it's not extremely intuitive until you've done it once then it's great.

When you get to the end of the path you just turn left and go to the road just on the other side, they have it painted and everything - you just follow the paint on the road for like .25 miles and it cuts back onto another miles a half of soft gravel. That extra area is probably my favorite area of all of it, it has the most tree cover and has the most elevation gain.

ETA: Also officially back at it today! My fitness is lower than it's been in forever, I can't even run 5 miles without a huge break, and my heart rate spiked into the 170s the entire time just for funsies... getting over this hump is gonna be rough. With an injury I didn't want to jump back in too quickly though, and last week I had a chest cold and didn't want to aggravate my injury by not providing my muscles and tendons the proper oxygen

Anyone have any workout recommendations for Achilles tendonitis

A friend of mine continued training for a marathon using a elliptical machine. Other than that as a option rest is the other option for most I hear. Hope it improves sooner than later for you.

It was definitely confusing. I only needed 12 miles and I was already at 5.5 when I got to the weird intersection. I'll have to try it again. Like the gravel track. Easier on the feet.

Anyone have any workout recommendations for Achilles tendonitis? Self-diagnosed myself but yeah, this shirt is hurting after any run, so I'm trying to do something I can manage in a gym for the next couple of weeks before I get back to regular running

I have chronic insertional achilles tendonitis but am able to continue running by doing the following. When it flares up, I take a week or two off of running and I will swim, jog in the pool or bike. I ice it every night and use Voltaren twice a day. When my heal is not so stiff in the mornings and the swelling has gone down a bit I will start running again but will walk and jog 4-5 miles and build up from there. I do not run two days in a row. I use heal inserts, very cushioned high drop running shoes and try to land on my mid foot to avoid stress on the achilles. I don't run over 8 miles, generally. I do leg and calf strengthening exercises everyday, such as heel lifts. If still having issues after a month I go see my sports therapist for exercises and treatment for 4-8 weeks. It's a lot of work.

Sounds like it. Right now I'm doing heel and calf stretching, using an ankle strap, and absolutely zero activity involving my feet/legs outside of going to work and coming home. The compression strap really helped a lot. Went ahead and got a muscle scraper from Amazon that'll be here Friday to help with getting some deeper tissue soreness.

I'm pretty sure this is all happening because I wasn't stretching as much after speed workouts that I've been adding over the last few months

Mine came about because I was so excited about getting rid of calf strains that I ramped up my mileage way too quickly. One month later, presto achilles tendonitis!

Do any of you folks run with the Varsity Sports Baton Rouge group on Saturdays?

I did a lot pre-dad mode. Now I just do the Wednesday runs, sometimes Mondays and Thursdays, depending on what I have already going on those days.

I miss them. Getting a run in before 9am and being done for the day to do whatever I want after felt nice. It's just hard to find the time and energy after having a baby. They usually get a pretty large group for Saturdays and have water spots for those runs at about 4 miles in. Minimum run distance is usually 8 miles those days. All other days (M/W/Th) will go no more than 5 miles.

I did a good bit of running with them before and after with our first child. On weekends when my wife worked I usually picked a different route that was safer to take the stroller on. After kid #2, I had zero shot, then I got lazy and had numerous health things happen. Was hopeful that maybe someone on here ran with them to have someone I run with maybe lol. Most of the people that I was friends with gave it up. I was friends with folks that were older than me at the time. I did enjoy it very much and made the trip twice with them for the Navy 10 NM race in early June. (~11.5 miles) If you find yourself going back out there let me know. Based on current fitness level I should be out there in mid Julyish depending on how much a slack on vacation lol.

The range of runners is pretty large. I used to be up there with some of the dudes putting down low 7/high 6 min. mile pace. Having the baby derailed that. I'm lucky to get 20 miles a week in now.

That being said, you'll usually be able to find a group within the whole group. It's a majority of people in their 50s-60s that really enjoy hobby jogging, going around 9 minute pace or slower. There's plenty of younger runners that will run low 8 minute pace for 10+ miles on a good day. Not a whole lot of people come out on their own and dip out, but we usually stick around for a bit after a run if it's at someplace worth staying.

Runs from Brew Ha-Ha, City Roots, Starbucks @ LSU will generally have a lingering group of runners. I believe Jenni has it set up during the Boston Marathon training time she'll have one of her VSBR members be assigned the slower pace group, then everyone else to go themselves. Check the calendar and see what works for you.

Mondays - usually some type of non-interval/5 mile type run. May include 1 on/1 off fartleks.
Tuesdays - Happy's Downtown 5k runs (not affiliated with VS)
Wednesdays - "Wasted Wednesday" where we drink beer after runs(that part isn't sponsored by VS but we hang out and do just that and have never run into issues). 5 mile runs from the VSBR store.
Thursdays - usually some type of interval run.
Saturdays - 8/10/12 mile runs (during the summers include water stops)

I believe I talked myself into joining them Saturday. Its a 8.5 mile route with a 5 mile option that I'll add a little to get to 6. I would like to join on some of the other days but I do not get off of work till 5:30 and I am on the wrong side of town to get anywhere fast. I guess we shall see how it goes on Saturday.

Made it to the run this morning. Group did 8.5 miles but I’m no where near ready for that so I ended up with 6.6. It was hot! Went out to fast and suffered on the second half, but it’s done. Spending the rest of the day smoking a Boston butt.
