I had hip replacement surgery in May and slowly but surely working my way to running again. Today, I ran 6.2 miles (the longest I've ran in quite a while) at an average pace of 9:13 per mile. I know that's not as fast as some of you can run but I think it's pretty good for me at this moment! I'm really trying to get my pace to less than 9 which I've done once but want to do it on the regular! :)

i got injured in august, was out until the end of january pretty much. did a shite load of peloton during my time on the shelf, it actually kept me in pretty good shape. first race back is on saturday. we shall see how things go.

6.5 miles today, gradually got faster every mile. Feels good to run pain free
ETA I responded to the most recent post without even reading, 1999. Didn't mean to sound like a dick regarding injury, I've been injured myself on and off since college. Hope your race went well

Are the runners world marathon training plans good to follow? I've got my first marathon in several months. I've ran a half at 8:00 min/mi and I frequently run 7:00 min/mi 5/10ks

back in my road racing days I always followed the hanson plan. you can buy the book on amazon.

Ran Blue Bell 10K in 55 min flat official time yesterday and quads are sore to the touch today.
Was first time running since Houston Marathon 5K on January 15th. Thankfully my CrossFit training has kept me run ready given the lapse.

I did an impromptu 5k "simulation" this weekend to test out my new Vaporflys. Warmed up, stretched, then 4km on, 60 seconds rest, 1km on. I put simulation in quotes because I was going to run it all as a 5k time trial and realized about halfway in that I was a little less aerobically fit than I thought.
The 5k was 22:02, not counting the 60sec rest. Not exactly sure what I was expecting since I've only been doing 2 months of easy runs to build a base. I think I'm satisfied with it but feel like I need 1-2 more months of base before I start speed. The plan for now is more easy runs, throw in a quality workout or two per week during summer, a fall 5k here and there, then maybe start my first marathon plan for the Louisiana Marathon in January.

Anyone here doing the crescent city classic?
Posted on 4/10/22 at 7:29 am to TheIndulger
Not this year, I am doing an out of town 5k.
Posted on 4/10/22 at 3:31 pm to TheIndulger
I'm not. I was tentatively going to do it with my 5k TT being the decider. I don't think I'm in shape to get top 500 (for the poster) so I'm not wasting my money on it.

I'll be out there.
Qualified in October, but I'll be running from the charity corrals. Really hoping I can bob and weave enough to get a poster, but time will tell. Hit 58 on 10k time during my 11 miler on Saturday so we'll see how my legs do picking up the pace for a shorter run.

What pace are you planning? I ran 44 mid a few years ago and just barely got one.
I was listening to a Jack Daniels seminar this morning and he was talking about competitive people getting it wrong by only racing when they're fit; that it's more fun to race when you're not fit so you get to see the exponential gains that come from training. Now I'm wondering if I should sign up and hobble out there!

I’m planning to run it. No idea what to expect for pace.
For some reason my right foot keeps going numb on my runs. No clue why. Same socks I’ve always run in and I don’t tie my laces tight. Wondering if my Endorphin Speeds aren’t providing enough arch support for me? No clue. Really annoying.

Fast enough to have fun but not so fast I'm puking up any fireball shots I take/hand out during the race.

Just recently started jogging outside again. I’ve basically just been a treadmill walk/jog guy for ages now, but decided I want to get outdoors again. I’m looking for a few recs on new shoes, and other products. Specifically just for fitness, and slowly building up endurance. I’m not going to be winning any races over here.
Shoes: Neutral running shoes under $160? Price isn’t a big deal, but thought I’d throw that out there. Last couple of running shoes I’ve purchased were Brooks Ghost models. They fit my foot well, but I’m looking to mix it up and go with another company. I’ve done a bit of research and it seems the ASICS Novablast 2 have favorable reviews. So I’ll try those on, but looking for a few others to try. No stability issues. Just looking for a comfortable shoe that will let me rack up miles.
Music Streaming Device with gps: ok, so this is the segment where I feel very out of the loop. After running with my phone the last couple of weeks I’ve decided I have to have something small I can put in a pocket or wear, and I don’t want to strap the phone to my arm, and certainly don’t want to carry it in my hand like I have been doing, and it’s too big to fit comfortably in my pocket. Should I be looking for the smallest phone that has access to google play store, are there mp3 style devices that have access to download apps like tidal for offline play. Should I just look at smart watches. What do you guys use?
Earbuds: I have a cheap pair I’ve been using, but looking for a better pair that has anc, and a pass through mode for traffic & surroundings. Also, are there models that help to reduce that pressure “thump” with every foot strike, or is that basically unavoidable because all earbuds create a seal in your ear?
And finally Running Apps: there are so many it’s overwhelming, but I’m looking for something that will keep track of the basics (speed, time, route, etc.) and maybe something that has weekly workout plans to build up to 5k, 10k, etc.

Get some New Balance 1080v10 on sale from joesnewbalanceoutlet. I’ve heard good things about the Novablast, but I’ve also heard they’re unstable so probably better for someone with a consistent and controlled foot strike, if that makes sense.

Garmin 245 Music. Or get a SpiBelt and run with your phone.

No clue, I don’t run with music. Someone else will probably chime in.

Running Apps
If you get a Garmin watch, the Garmin app is solid. Can download Strava for free as well, or the Nike Run app. They’re all about the same. Strava+ is $60 per year and gives some more data/metrics.

Additional things to think about
The Novablast 2 has an 8mm heel drop and the Ghost has a 12mm heel drop. If your running has been light on the miles you may have some growing pains in the beginning. It won't be as severe as going from a pair of Ghosts to a 0mm shoe but something to think about.
I bring my phone with me to listen to podcasts. As J mentioned you can consider a Spibelt for your phone. I wear one when unless it's winter and I'm wearing a top with a pocket. The 245 Music seems to be popular here in this thread. I think some of the Garmin watches allow you to download a Spotify or Pandora playlist directly to the watch so the phone is not needed for streaming. My watch doesn't have music storage (Fenix 6, not Pro) but I can control things from my watch. I use Aftershocks for my audio needs; the company recently rebranded as Shokz. They use bone conductive technology so they leave your ear holes completely open to surrounding noise. They work more than fine for my ears and for what I listen to.
If you buy a Garmin watch the app works well for recording your runs and has free digital coaching plans for 5k, 10k, and half marathon. I use both Strava and the Garmin app; my watch stars and stops the recording and then automatically uploads the data to both apps so I never fiddle with manual recording.

+1 on Garmin 245. I upload a podcast or playlist to my watch before I run and leave my phone at home.
If I wear headphones I bring my Shokz. They're great, sound way better than I would've expected, and don't thump or prevent you from hearing your surroundings.

Thanks to you, and mcvick, for chiming in with your thoughts and recommendations. Good to know about the heel drop. That’s something I’ve never really paid attention to. I feel like I’m more of a mid-foot striker, but not really sure.
Also had zero clue something like the shokz even existed. Will give them a look along with the garmin line of watches too. Sounds nice. Thanks again for the feedback.
