Now, there are a lot of rides that start past the Iberville/East Baton Rouge Parish line.

It is what it is. Much to the rejoice of folks like you, the Baton Rouge cycling community is dying (no pun intended), so motorists likely won't have to deal with us out on River Road much longer.
And this is sad, because it really is a great sport.

I don't think you got the point of that statement. I know you assume the risk. I'm just stating that the "public opinion" is that the cyclist should have never been there and rarely do we talk about the driver. A driver put a person in the hospital by doing something illegal and there is a 7 page thread about how bad cyclists are. If a person got murdered in the ghetto, we'd likely wonder why they were there, but we'd be talking about how bad North BR is and how crime is out of control. The court of public opinion is against cyclists even when they aren't at fault. Yes they took on risk, but they are not at fault necessarily (I really don't know the details of this particular incident, just stating in general)
I don't know what happened in this situation, assuming the driver messed up and the biker is legal to be there....then I place 100% of the blame on the driver and not on the cyclist. The driver assumed the risk of driving on that road that a cyclist is likely to be on...and now he'll have to face ethe consequences of any and all actions that lead him there. None of that changes the fact that the cyclist is injured and could possibly die. The cyclist is the only person who had the ability to minimize that possibility. Guess why I will never be hit on a bicycle on that particular road?....

quote:Look, I agree. So is snow skiing. We don't get to do that here, unfortunately. And unfortunately, Baton Rouge (and surrounding areas) is not a good cycling city to live in. It's not pedestrian friendly. They have started making progress in creating bike lanes and paths, so it's a start.
it really is a great sport.

I'm simply pointing out the fact that cyclists have tried to be amenable to the growing pains that Baton Rouge/Ascension/Iberville have experienced. The area has done nothing to try to address this issue. We keep hearing about the levee paving project connecting where it ends by Farr Park to the area where it ends near Ben Hurr. If the levee was paved between those points, this 65-year old gentleman would likely not have been on River Road.
I saw someone mention somewhere that they think this guy might be a commuter--I have no idea if that is valid at all, but he wasn't a racer or out there 'training' for anything, that much is certain.

can be for as long as 10-15 mins, depending on how much traffic is coming from the other way
I don't think you have a concept of how long 10-15 minutes actually is.
There was a group I rode with for a while that got too big. So 20 riders stretched out was hard to pass. I didn't agree with that and stopped riding with them. But even then, I can remember an 18 wheeler on a country road behind us for 5 minutes. It felt like an eternity as the rider. Like that still stands out in my memory because I felt bad and it was probably 2 years ago. At 5 minutes I was ready to pull over and let him pass (luckily there was a safe spot to pass and didn't even need to). It truly is typically around 15-30 seconds at most. I rarely ever actually have people have to wait, they can usually just go with a slight slow down.

Well, our experiences differ, then. It is what it is. Cyclists in Baton Rouge have modified their behaviors, moved riding further and further South out of Baton Rouge toward St. Gabriel and will continue to do so.
And get closer and closer to the plants and getting right back into the same peoblem you have up here.

And that is better for everyone involved. Sucks that your hobby is dying. It really does. But I honestly won’t shed a tear. Bikes have zero place on the roadways where they can’t reach the speed limit. If you can’t go the speed limit, you don’t deserve to be there. End of story. It’s not safe nor fair to the rest of the people on the road.
You wouldn’t drive 25 on the interstate with everyone going 70 around you in your car would you? No because that’s dangerous as frick.
So why do you think it’s safe to go 10 in a 55 when you’re on a 10 lb bike?

I bet I’ve passed you at some point
I should just wave to all in case one of them is a poster.

you must be a fatty is your pushing 10mph down river road

I will say that when the ferry lets out I’ve been stuck behind bikes for longer than 30 seconds, though.

I've came up on the long stretch of cyclists and have had to wait for the miracle open patch of oncoming traffic for ten minutes, probably a dozen times. If it makes you feel better to say I'm not telling the truth, knock yourself out.
It's why I'm so adamant about my stance on cyclists on River Road.

and a lot of times the cyclist is trying to prove a point so he/she is hugging that center line
Hugging the center line is dumb. But, hugging the outside line is dangerous too. It gives drivers a false sense of space and they will try to squeeze through and a lot of times get wayyyyy too close. You are supposed to take the right 3rd of the land as a cyclist. It's called establishing your presence in the lane.

Herp derp. English your second language hammed?
Is 25 in a 55 better?
Is going 25 in a 55 down a 2 lane road where the rest of traffic is going 55mph safe?

sure if you obey the laws and get off your fricking phone and the cyclist isn't riding like an a-hole
people do it all day every day all over the world.. but you Louisiana mouth breathers simply can't handle it

Said it in another post. This annoys me somewhat. If you ride in a big group, there should be protocol to let cars pass. Break up into groups of 4 or something and leave gaps so the car can pass a small group at a time or something. 30 people stretched out is inconsiderate. But I rarely come across that. And I lived on River Road.....I'm familiar. Still, 10 minutes is a LONG time.

I really think it would change everything if they just paved the whole levee from Ben hur all the way around the point.
I got it. Have the plants pay for 1/2 of this instead of the parishes/cities. Someone start a campaign and get the facilities along River Road on board.
They can raise money from union baws doing jambalaya plates and shite like they do for United Way(I'm very familiar with these campaigns at plants).
Then the other 1/2 can be raised by the cyclists and cities/parishes involved.
This model could be adopted to Pave the Levee from BR to NOLA. WIN muthafrickin WIN. BOOM.
I'm such a problem solver.

I’m not talking about a cyclist.
If you’re in your car. And you’re going 25mph When the speed limit is 55. The rest of traffic is going 55. It’s a 2 lane road.
Is what you’re doing safe?
The answer, of course, is NO. It’s fricking dangerous as all get out.
