Way to stereotype buddy. Actually it's just a half ton (that's a full size truck but the smallest kind with no truck nuts) a couple years old and fully paid off

So you're poor.

Having a fully paid off couple year old truck makes me poor? Now you're just reaching, sounds like your biking shorts are all wadded up...

I almost got the Garmin Varia light. It's a radar that blinks constantly, but also informs you when a car is coming form behind by beeping on your cycling computer and will blink faster for the car to see as it gets closer.

But then I just decided to get a good trainer and ride inside. Did 95% of my Ironman training indoors anyway. If I could train for that indoors, I can train for anything.

It's really sad. I can understand cyclists should avoid certain roads. But the ones in the middle of nowhere, where you rarely have two cars crossing paths in opposite directions, so a car can easily go around you....it shouldn't be difficult to ride those. There are wayyyyyyy more cyclists (and cars for that matter) where I live compared to BR and it's just not that difficult to drive with them on the road. It should not be difficult to not hit a person with your car. But it apparently is and I'm not taking that risk anymore.

of these ghost bikes posted everywhere should be a warning not ride on the fricking road. People’s attention is too fractured these days

It's a problem in Baton Rouge because drivers are very bad, distracted, and won't take any responsibility for it.

It's why Louisiana has the highest cat insurance rates.

Yes. The red light is good too. I feel like people riding without in the morning or at dusk on that road have a death wish. ESPECIALLY in the fog.

Hell, I put a blinky light on my dog when we walk at night even though I get off the road when I see a car.

I wouldn't mind seeing Stretches of River Road and the Lakeshores(LSU Lakes) made in to one-way for vehicles, allowing a 2-way lane for pedestrians/bicycles.

Like Capital Heights.

Legal use yes...those aren't the laws some of you enthusiasts don't seem to get though. The laws of physics say you on your bicycle will lose every time. You can't control the car drivers speeds and abilities. All you can control are your own actions. When you ride on the road way, you are and always will be riding at your own risk. Complain all you want, but you cannot change the laws of physics which is the only law that truly matterss for you as a cyclist if you get hit.

I personally would never ride at night. Sometimes you get on the road a bit early and the sun isn't quite fully up. But never dark enough where I need a light for you to see me. I still used a light to get attention though.

There are people around me that ride at 4 in the morning. Lit up like a Christmas tree though, so still not really an excuse to not see them. they are as visible as any car.

Cyclist love to tout how they can use the road too!

And then promptly peddle between stopped cars, run red lights, not stop at stop signs, etc.

Ok here's the thing that cyclists need to understand. River Road may seem like it's "out in the middle of nowhere", but a lot of plant workers from St. Gabriel and Plaquemine (ferry traffic) use River Road to avoid using Hwy 30. So in essence, it's not really a good road to use. In fact, because it's so small with a lot of blind curves on it, cyclists would be safer to use the shoulder on Hwy 30 - for visibility's sake.

I've seen groups of cyclists using River Road at 5 pm on a weekday.

Newsflash: 5 pm is when the relief comes on and you have a bunch of tired plant workers who have been out in the rain or sun all day and just want to get home. The last thing they want holding them up is douchey spandex pencil dick riding out in the middle of the road because he feels entitled to own the road and hold up traffic.

And the reason that insurance rates are so high in Louisiana is because we have an insurance commission panel of mostly attorneys who keep rubber stamping increases.
