La. needs to grow the economy

and quit trying to grow govt. by raising taxes.
While our politicians argue about whether to raise sales taxes by s third of a penny, a half a penny or keep the entire penny; we are losing people and the state economy is shrinking.
What is the governor doing to get things going? He's been governor for two years now. He pushed through the largest tax increase in state history, 1.2 Billion dollars to fill in the gaps but looked what happened to the state's economic numbers. Not good.
We hear that La. has to induce folks to come do budiness in La. We heard how we were going to grow a vibrant movie industry. We read about the tax breaks we dole out to get these mega projects, we see the money the Saints get, and after it all we can't pay our bills.
Does anyone really believe our strategy is working? Shouldn't a growing economy bring in more revenues to the state, and we shouldn't have to raise taxes to pay our bills?
It's not s Republican or Democrat thing. Yes Edwards is s tax guy and Jindal was anti tax; however, Jindal doled out the perks with the best of them. He let the Hollywood crowd, the Saints, the nursing home folks and all the other special interests get special treatment with the idea that all these deals would grow the economy and create jobs. It did not work.
But we are where we are now. Governor Edwards is in charge. Besides raising taxes, what have you got?

i don't think it's possible that LA really grows the economy very well, short of somehow getting like 3-5 major auto plants or something
we just don't have the state to attract higher-level businesses to locate here, bringing higher-paying jobs
we're left selling our soul with tax credits for lower-level opportunities, which everyone in the south is going for, with better offers

Because crooked Louisiana politicians will shake them down for kickbacks or tax them into oblivion.

You are really wasting your time thinking about La. government. La. isn't going to improve. If you don't like it, you aren't going to be able to change it, so it's futile thinking about it. Even more futile to discuss it.
But you are right to bring the topic to this board. It is a Political topic board. I appreciate your thoughts and I respect your opinion.
Young folks should use TOPS for their college education and then move to another state to start and finish their professional lives.

Yep and our road infrastructure is shite, which also is not helping to bring in new business

There use to be 8 or 9 buildings on poydras named after oil companies. They started leaving in the 90's going to Houston. Don't think there are any left.
They all left over taxes and poor schools (got this from an Exxon guy).
Your gov't did nothing to counter what Texas was offering so 10's of thousands of very high paying jobs left the state never to come back.
And the oil is off the coast of Louisiana !!!

frick that shite.
Why should we be paying to develop another state's workforce instead of staying to help Louisiana grow which is the point of the program?
I'm of the opinion that we should eliminate TOPS altogether with a few schools if TOPS is going to be abused like this.

Yes. In other words, it will never happen. I agree with you.
Big auto plants aren't moving to La. A number of them have had previous opportunities to do so with generous enticements, but they always move to another Southern state.

yes, but even ignoring that
those jobs can be located in like Nola and BR. places with higher COL given the size of the cities (compared to similar cities) and then on top of that you have to shave $10-20k/year off the salary to put kids in private school. what is the lure compared to similar cities?
then add in how both cities are 2 of the most violent cities in America and the lack of "big city" amenities/culture...andthat's why NOla keeps losing HQs

we need a solution for our k-12 system and our roads
tops is a bernie-style luxury we can't afford
medicaid expansion was a gigantic mistake, as everyone said at the time, but we really can't go back
we absolutely need to consolidate higher ed, but so we can fund the big schools better, not spend less overall
we are so absolutely fricked

People keep using the school excuse and that may have something to do with it, but more than anything else is the parochial nature of Louisiana politics . It's North vs. South It's urban vs. rural and it's everybody against the NOLA area
Had a former legislator from the New Orleans area once tell me that every time they would bring up something for road improvement for example that would benefit the NO/BR region there would always be some rural legislator or group of them that would introduce a rider or amendment to the bill to get their area some goodies whether it was justified or not.
The only guy who did not put up with it was Mike Foster....interestingly enough, when Foster was governor, things overall worked quite smoothly
Can we get the big man or even Murphy(son) to run for governor?

I appreciate your sentiment, but, so long as the TOPS program allows a young person to obtain this state govt benefit and then move away from La. forever, my recommendation stands.
Has La. restricted the travel rights of beneficiaries of TOPS just yet? If not, then, my recommendation stands -- young folks, get out of here. You can visit your wife's family by traveling at holiday times.

It may be legal to do cheat the people of Louisiana out of their tax dollars by taking that college education out of state to improve another state but it's still scummy as shite.
My cousin got TOPS, went to LSU and med school in Nola and lives here in this state making the big bucks as a doctor. That's giving the people of Louisiana their tax dollars back. A great man.

One big problem is people here don't want to change. We have the mouth of the Mississippi river, ungodly amount of oil and gas yet lead the country in mostly the worst categories. Too much corruption, nepotism and outright stupidity kills us here.
Try cutting the government or consolidating schools and people lose their minds saying you can't do that or it won't work. Yet our neighbor Texas nails it and we stick our heads in the mud.
I had a friend whose old mom complained about how her two sons were trying to move to Houston. She also believed Hammond was big enough and didn't need anymore growth and one could get a job there. The concept of a better life is alien to some people accustomed to scraps.
Louisiana by just geography and natural resources should have massive wealth that would make Norway jealous yet here we are dirt broke and a welfare state.

I wish that everyone who had the intelligence and character to become a physician would do so. I applaud your cousin's character and choice.

We have the state because of all the resources and the biggest attraction of them all with the Mississippi and the ports.
We just don’t have the infrastructure

We need to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit! That will put more money in the pockets of the working poor who will then spend that money with will grow the economy.
Combine that with a minimum wage increase and BAMN! economic growth
If only big business and republicans weren't so greedy! They need to be more moral.
