here use to be 8 or 9 buildings on poydras named after oil companies. They started leaving in the 90's going to Houston. Don't think there are any left.
They all left over taxes and poor schools (got this from an Exxon guy).

Albemarle was one of the most recent companies to move their corporate headquarters in 2016. The reason: poor infrastructure, poor airport, and a lack of good schools to attract an educated workforce.

It's been almost 30 years since the oil companies left, but it's still the same story in LA.

You are really wasting your time thinking about La. government. La. isn't going to improve. If you don't like it, you aren't going to be able to change it, so it's futile thinking about it. Even more futile to discuss it.

I'm pro-both, but neither will improve LA.

No one gets it - it's a culture/people problem, not an infrastructure/tax problem.

This is a micro and a macro issue. Local, state, and federal governments need to thing long term. TIFs are the key. Give TIFs to companies willing to relocate and recognize that you will not make money on the business itself, but the secondary and tertiary affects. Increased employment increases the tax base and spending, which increases revenues.

The TIFs the government is giving away, if utilized correctly, is money the government isn’t collecting anyway, so it’s a 0 sum game.

One big problem is people here don't want to change. We have the mouth of the Mississippi river, ungodly amount of oil and gas yet lead the country in mostly the worst categories. Too much corruption, nepotism and outright stupidity kills us here.

Try cutting the government or consolidating schools and people lose their minds saying you can't do that or it won't work. Yet our neighbor Texas nails it and we stick our heads in the mud.

I had a friend whose old mom complained about how her two sons were trying to move to Houston. She also believed Hammond was big enough and didn't need anymore growth and one could get a job there. The concept of a better life is alien to some people accustomed to scraps.

Louisiana by just geography and natural resources should have massive wealth that would make Norway jealous yet here we are dirt broke and a welfare state.

ALLLLLLLL of this ^

Well put.

It is a big part of the problem. But it's not an easy fix.

Give money to help educate disadvantaged citizens; you are throwing money at a problem so a lot of it will be wasted.

Give money to help educate those more likely to succeed and it's middle class welfare and you are helping to train Texas's workforce so a lot of that money is wasted.

And to raise this money in the first place you need to increase taxes which helps drive even more business and citizens from the state.

Keep this in mind half of LSU grads move to Texas. HALF. That is engineers, lawyers, and other highly productive young citizens taking their tax money elsewhere

these are simple fixes that would do a world of good for the 2 biggest issues: Infrastructure and education.

Then, they can change TOPS to require that you stay in Louisiana for 10 years after graduating (that's to stop kids from staying in school to get their Masters ).

the big question then would be how to stop politicians from lining their pockets...

They need to stop tops.
You hit 18 yrs old you are an adult and should pay for your own education.
The big problem in Louisiana is our roads are horrible, corrupt politicians that cannot sell the advantages of relocating a business here, and k-12 education is horrible.

the underclass is probably about half of our population. hell it may be over 50% these days

other than super low-level work (like auto manufacturing like i said earlier), what industry will look at our population and go "we can recruit people for our jobs in Louisiana!"?

the underclass culture requires, and votes for, political systems that redistribute wealth to support their lifestyles

so it's both

Companies in LA also can’t recruit talent to the state because the schools among other things are so shitty. So even homegrown enterprises are moving to TX just so they have a shot at top tier talent.

Folks, LA is the Guatemala of the US. Grab your kids and cross the Sabine before they build a wall!!!!
