Rizzo is a good guy so I think he gets a little bit of benefit of doubt. Don’t think it was blatantly dirty, but definitely gets you upset if it happens to your team. If it was a player like Baez then I think it’s 100% perceived as dirty.

He definitely doesn't seem like the type to try and injure someone, but I still wouldn't be surprised if he gets hit tonight

Not only dirty but trashy AF

I don't understand all the "dirty" claims. I think it was illegal and should have been called interference, but it wasn't dirty, i.e., done with the intent to hurt or injure the catcher. He is clearly trying to break up a double play. If he wanted to be dirty, he could have slid cleats up into the catcher's knee. 5 years ago, this is just a "clean, hard baseball play."

Guess it depends on what you mean by dirty. I think of dirty as intentionally trying to hurt a guy. I see it as just trying to break up a double play.
I think this is the explanation I agree with the most bwall. I definitely don't think he's trying to hurt the guy, just trying to make a play to help his team. Is it against the rules in this increasingly no-contact environment? The umps reviewed it and thought not...I guess the rules are still so subjective it's hard to say.

I would say slightly dirty... he did still get the plate, and didn't go in spikes up trying to hurt the catcher.
It definitely should have been called interference though, since he deviated from his line specifically to make contact. Any runner at third base should be starting on the foul side of the baseline, and should never end up on the fair side crossing the plate unless the catcher is blocking the foul side.

This is the second time he has attempted a dirty slide

Not what I expect from him (Rizzo). Diaz was so far off the plate and not in a position to defend himself. Rizzo should definitely be getting a fastball in the ribs for that one then its over, and everyone moves on.
Interesting that they didn't call the runner at first out though. I am pretty sure in pre-replay days, that call is "out" on interference. But following letter of the law, slide was legal as he came over the base with his hand.

The part of he rule in question is deviation
Rizzo clearly changes his path at the end of his run when he slides
For this play to be legal, you would have to say rizzo changes his path for a reason other than contacting the catcher
Hell, maybe there was glass or something on the base path he was trying to avoid

Major League Baseball reviewed the play, and indicated that its determination was that there was a violation of the rule regarding slides. The Pirates were pleased to gain some clarity on the call, while Cubs manager Joe Maddon defended Rizzo and disagreed with MLB Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre.

According to MLB Rule 6.01(j), a bona fide slide "occurs when the runner (1) begins his slide (i.e., makes contact with the ground) before reaching the base; (2) is able and attempts to reach the base with his hand or foot; (3) is able and attempts to remain on the base (except home plate) after completion of the slide; and (4) slides within reach of the base without changing his pathway for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder

It's also not the first time Rizzo has had an aggressive, controversial slide at home plate, with a similar issue coming last June that was ruled illegal:

A catcher is not a middle infielder. Shouldn't be expected to jump over a baserunner, who's already way out, and not even facing the catcher, in all that gear.
If it were October, I get it, but this is wayyyy too aggressive for a game in late May.

Then MLB screwed it up. I thought it was bush, but within the rules, nice to see that it is not, though I guess open to some interpretation. I hope he gets drilled with a heater (ribs or arse) to bring the universe back into balance.

I dont think it was all that bad. A fine sure, nothing more.
This is how I think the rule should be.
Anything goes as long as the base runner's body touches home plate(not arms). This is because the runner is attempting to score while disrupting the play.

In today’s game, dirty. In the old days, nah.
Me personally, it doesn’t bother me one way or another.

He's not getting suspended or fined so it isn't a dirty play.
Posted on 5/30/18 at 11:08 am to medtiger
I dont think he intended it to be dirty but it looks dirty. The catcher was a foot or two in front of the batter's box. The catcher was in the process of throwing the ball and not making a play directly at the plate.

In all seriousness, he knows Rizzo is there and is barreling down on him.
Which is why he moved two feet off the plate. Diaz was no where near home and there is no expectation of contact at that point.
Not dirty from the standpoint that there was no intent to injure. Dirty from the standpoint that he went out of his way to initiate contact with a guy no where near the plate.
