Dirty from the standpoint that he went out of his way to initiate contact with a guy no where near the plate.
Who also wasnt looking at all

That is what makes it dirty to me. Sliding into the back of someones leg who isnt looking has a high probability of injury

You cant simply claim innocence at that point due to intent

For example, lets say you blindside late hit a QB

Would people say it isnt dirty because "he wasnt trying to injure him, he was just doing it so the QB would remember the hit and be shaky in they pocket"

If it isn't dirty it is only because the catcher didn't get hurt. Guy gets hurt and it is an easy "dirty" call.

Was it dirty? I would say a bit but he could have taken the leg out higher and then it would have been a no doubter.

Maddon, god what a tool
quote:

Maddon, in fact, blamed Diaz for the incident. A former minor league catcher, Maddon said Diaz did not use proper technique.

"What would have happened had the catcher thrown to first base and completed the play before Anthony knocked him down?" Maddon asked a large group of reporters who'd gathered in the PNC Park visitors' dugout 90 minutes before Tuesday's game. "Anybody? …

"Nothing. So don't penalize Anthony for running hard."

quote:

"Anthony is coming down the line, the catcher is right there," he said. "The catcher has an option to get rid of the ball more quickly, get farther out in front of home plate or just hold on to it. He could have done those three things also. Those are three results that could have happened. Don't penalize Anthony for doing the right baseball thing that he's been taught to do from the time he was a kid."

quote:

"It's about technique, it's about having a clock in your head, it's about eyes in the back of your head," Maddon said. "If you can't do that, then don't catch, don't play the position, don't do those things."

I bet he would sing a different tune if a play like that happened to Conteras

5 years ago, this is just a "clean, hard baseball play."

25, 50, 75, and 100 years ago, it was a "clean, hard, baseball play".

Nowadays, it's "OMG, that's so dirty, suspend him, hit him" blah, blah, blah.

Dirty. The catcher made a deliberate attempt to vacate the baseline so that Rizzo wouldn't run into him. Then, Rizzo takes a very, very narrow angle towards the plate, swings his legs out of the basepath, and hits the catcher without even completing the slide. Even worse, Rizzo doesn't even slide onto the plate. His body ends up stopping before reaching home and his left foot (the foot he swung out) is two feet away from the plate.

With this information, there are two conclusions: 1) Anthony Rizzo doesn't know how to properly slide, or 2) Anthony Rizzo was intentionally trying to take our Diaz' legs so that he wouldn't be able to make the throw to first base.

I'm going with the latter.

Look at the photo evidence right above your post, Baloo. Which is it, you're waffling all over the place. Dirty, best kind of dirty slide, but the catcher cleared out. Then next sentence: "He should be an area where he will not be hit by the runner..."

I think my post was pretty clear. He managed to obey the text of the rule by violating its spirit. Which is pretty much the perfect dirty play. He tried to injure the catcher while at the same time avoiding sanction from the rulebook. That's skilled dirty.

Really?

You don’t think he deviated to make contact?

Javier Baez gets a little feisty on a perfectly legal slide tonight. He would have a meltdown if someone slide into him like Bryant

I don’t think it was dirty as it doesn’t look like he had any intentions of hurting the guy. It was without a doubt interference though.

Dirty? I don’t think so. Against the rules? Yes and should have been enforced.

This is gonna sound pretty strange but here it goes: I think it was dirty as shite but i don't hate Rizzo for it or anything. IMO this is the kinda thing that should be handled on the field with an asswhippin. Let him try that on Yadi one day, I guarantee you he won't do it again

He was obviously trying to take out the catcher. But not to hurt him, just to break up the double plays.
So I vote Not Dirty; but illegal (or it should be).
