The federal government estimates that per mile traveled in 2015, the number of deaths on motorcycles was nearly 29 times the number in cars.

A total of 4,976 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2016. Motorcyclist deaths had been declining since the early 1980s but began to increase in 1998 and continued to increase through 2008. Motorcycle deaths accounted for 13 percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths in 2016 and were more than double the number of motorcyclist deaths in 1997.

I always wanted a street bike, but obviously would prefer not to die so haven’t yet purchased one and probably never will .

Enjoy the regret.

Rationalizing a motorcycle to this group is like convincing your local lib to buy a gun. I’ve ridden almost a million miles in 30+ years - never been killed once - had some of the best adventures of my life - and don’t regret a single minute.

Friend had a motor scooter to drive to class at LSU. I was using it. Driver t-boned me after running red light. Night in hospital. Somehow got over that and started riding bikes (as in cycling). But recently decided I am training for closed course racing and doing all training indoors. Roads are filled with bad drivers and on top of that, there are aggressve drivers who have no issue being dangerous when they know they are in a vehicle and you are much more vulnerable.

Bikes aren’t dangerous if you ride like a normal person and not an indignant a-hole.

The dangerous part are the other drivers on the road. They can’t pay attention enough to avoid hitting other cars. No way I would ride a bike on any major road or highway

I rode one senior year of HS and commuted from Gonzales to LSU every day for 4 years on one. Only days I didn’t was on days it was DOWNPOURING, then I took my truck. It was literally to save money as I was piss broke.

That being said, I never had any issues until one day when an old arse man turned right on red and pulled directly in front of me at a light. I slammed into the back of him doing around 50 (under the speed limit). I had trauma to some internal organs, lost my right kidney, broke my left arm in 2 places and 4 open fractures in my hand. A police officer at the light saw everything and immediately called for an ambulance. He came and visited me after and said he thought he watched a man die that day.

Was a blast while it lasted though. If it wasn’t for that I’d still be riding daily. I gave up the motorcycle thing and bought a Jeep.

I wouldn't go that far.

I'm a young guy that rides a sportbike, although I dont ride it like an idiot. I'd say I have a near death experience about once a year.

The scary people are the idiots that are riding bikes way too big. I routinely talk to guys who have been riding less than 6 months and their every day bike is 1000cc+. Those guys barely know how to maneuver evasively, yet they're riding something that can go from 30-100mph in a couple seconds.

Motorcycles can be lots of fun to ride. The problem is that if you want to stay out of the hospital you have to drive so defensively that it isn't any fun.

I'm not saying they're dangerous but the KKK was in favor of free distribution on the dark side of town....

Drivers have always been distracted and dont see motorcycles or give them respect on the road. However, with smartphones now and people on them constantly it makes it even more dangerous for motorcycles.

Based on what I’ve seen, it’s not so much the bike that’s dangerous but the way people ride like total assholes.

Look twice, save a life? Lol. How bout you don’t zip thru cars in traffic at 95mph

I’ve put about 40k miles on one (a lot for a motorcycle) over in Europe. Even did like 9hr road trips. It’s probably quite a bit safer here as drivers are well aware of scooters and bikes and know to not merge quickly and to check the mirror etc etc. Having said that, you don’t get many second chances if something goes really wrong.

Not safe at all. It's been worth it to me for the last 8 years, though. At lot of your safety is up to you and some of it is russian roulette. Depends on where you ride, too. There are some places around Nashville (*cough* Antioch *cough*) that I just won't ride through, period. Others, like Brentwood and Franklin and the Smokies have never been a problem.

You have to have a 6th sense for what other drivers are doing to do. Many times you will know before they do what they're going to do next. I've also been ambushed a few times when someone did something so stupid and illogical I couldn't anticipate it. Your riding skills are the only thing that save you then, if anything can.

If you're really interested, read the Hurt Report. It's old, but still relevant. One of the take aways for me was the danger on a motorcycle is not spread evenly across motorcycle types or demographics. For instance, you are several times (I can't remember the exact number) more likely to have an accident in the first 6 months of owning a new bike...regardless of how long you've been riding. That's even worse for your first 6 months of riding.

Another example is most motorcycle accidents are single-vehicle. Which means most of the time, though not all the time, the rider could have prevented it. The next most likely cause was people turning across the path of the rider. That and deer are the two that scare every rider I now, because you can't predict them or even avoid them.

I low-sided at around 25mph turning into my neighborhood a month after I got my endorsement. Just twisted my foot up a bit, but I was armored up so not too bad at all. It was an eye-opening experience in many ways. Made me very cautious for the rest of my riding career. Sometimes so much so it's not very fun.

I have prepared myself for the downvotes.
