Hornsby career .358
Triple crown
Batted .400 3 times.

Nap lajoie batted .400 3 times and won triple crown same year as batted .400. Only person ever.
Also 2nd baseman and way way ahead of current nominees.

A lot of people had absurd averages back then. Hornsby sure as hell ain't hitting .400 today.

Trout absolutely has a chance to be the best center fielder of all time.

He may have the talent but no way to predict if he has the longevity. I'd rank Mantle, Mays, Griffey, Dimaggio, and Cobb over Trout right now. He has a long way to go before he passes any of those guys.

Crying shame that Trout plays on the west coast and most of America is asleep for at least half his games

Trout has been in the league for 6 years & he has finished either 1st or 2nd in MVP voting 5 of those years.

Only potential GOAT at their position is Trout. Kershaw isn't even one of the top four pitchers in the last 30 years. Clemens, Maddux, Pedro and Unit were all better than him by a clear margin. And as much as I like Altuve, he has a long way to go to pass Craig Biggio as the greatest 2B in Astros history much less be in the GOAT conversation.

A lot of people talking about Trout needing to "up his game", I'm pretty sure he has had the best start to a career ever. He just needs to maintain that over a long period, which isn't going to be easy, but I wouldn't bet against Mike Trout.

LOL. 3 cy young awards, a triple crown, and an MVP. Clear margin is a ridiculous thing to say.

He can't just maintain because Mantle has about 4-5 seasons better than Trouts best(so far) and Mays also has about 2-3

comparing players of different eras in a sport that’s 150 years old is fricking stupid

I don't think he's had a season as good as what Griffey did from 1996-1999 either and arguably his strike shortened 1994 season or his 1993 season.

Take a look at this WAR comparison chart between Kershaw, Clemens, Maddux, Pedro and Unit.

Kershaw is dead last for every season except the #1 best season where he slightly edges Maddux. Of course Kershaw is 29 years old and he's certainly capable of putting up more elite seasons but there's a sizable gap in peak between Kershaw and the four pitchers I mentioned.

I think Kershaw has a ways to go to match the career of the four you mentioned, no doubt, but his ERA's for the past five years are: 1.83, 1.77, 2.13, 1.69 and 2.31. Knowing that, it's hard for me to agree with "sizable gap in peak"

Ken Griffey Jr. was worth 6.6 WAR in 1998 and 4.9 WAR in 1999. Mike Trout would have to miss half a season to only put up 4.9 WAR.

By wRC+ (which puts a hitter relative to league average and accounts for ballparks and eras), Mike Trout's worst hitting season is better than Ken Griffey Jr.'s best (excluding Mike Trout's initial call-up in 2011.) Ken Griffey Jr was great and fun and everyone loved him, but Mike Trout is better than him.

No. None of them have the potential to be the greatest baseball players of all time at their position.

Trout definitely has a chance

Agreed.

That the Angels haven't been very good the past few seasons doesn't help with Trout's image. If they continue winning this year and Trout stays on his current pace then I'm sure people will come around. He has potential to be GOAT material and would have a HOF case if he retired today.

as does kershaw who has like the lowest career ERA, lowest career fip over anyone in the past century, and best career adjusted ERAs and fips amongst pitchers who have pitched as many innings as he has

Kershaw's career ERA shits on all those dudes and he has a better WHIP than them all. Those are important stats to look at.
