Fire fighting needs to be rethunk

In 2015, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 365,500 home structure fires. These fires caused 2,560 deaths, 11,075 civilian injuries, and $7 billion in direct damage. On average, seven people die in U.S. home fires per day.
quote:
As of 2014, there are around 1,134,400 firefighters serving in 27,198[1] fire departments nationwide and responding to emergencies from 58,150 fire stations. Of those firefighters, 31% or 346,150 were career firefighters and 69% or 788,250 were volunteers.[2]
If we just look at the 346,150 at an average base salary of $50k....not including medical, pension, and other expenses
346k X 50k = at least 17.3 billion vs 7 billion in damage.
Seems like they are just paramedics, we don't need an engine and full crew at each location. Just a couple guys who respond in an ambulance and if a structure is on fire they just evacuate and call a main fire crew. So it takes an extra 15 mins for them to get there, smoke damage, soot, etc ruins everything anyway.

What would that ratio look like if we had less fire fighters? I'd guess damages would go up significantly.

Isn't it more about insuring the fires don't spread?

how many of these could have been added to the death count though, smart guy?

Your posting privileges need to be re thunk... Damages, deaths, and injuries would all go up if we vastly reduced the number of firefighters.

I thought firefighters make more than 50k and have dank benefits
I thought if you get hired on you are set. I think there is a reason NO Fire sometimes goes years without hiring anyone ... no one leaves.

Much like police, who aren't there to prevent crime, but to stop it.

Houses aren't made of wood anymore. We use fire retardant gypsum board, and other resistant construction materials....add smoke detectors and fire fighters on call are overkill.

Someone hasn't seen a house be built apparently.

In Kenner firefighters start at less than $10 an hour I was shocked to hear that

Base pay in South Louisiana - no way starting out. Firefighters usually have contract work with another fire department or two and also have a side job.
I'm not knighting, I just know the salary isn't great. The nature of the shifts allows flexibility to do other things. I know plenty of firefighters who have an HVAC or construction business on the side. The benefits are probably above average.

Most every single family home is still a wood framed structure....

Firemen make their money with the massive amount of overtime they work.

Encased in fire resistant insulation, covered by fire retardant gypsum board....hell even most "wood floors" are fire retardant planking.
Woodhome ie shotgun, oldstyle construction
