Hey.

I am visiting the USA for 3 weeks in October/November but will not have a car. It will be my 4th time visiting but the other 3 times were mainly on the East Coast.

I am starting in Miami Beach(cheap flight and want a bit of sun) and ending in Los Angeles(watching the WWE Survivor Series). I am going to New Orleans after Miami for a LSU game but where else should I go?

I am thinking maybe Vegas with a trip to the Grand Canyon(it looks incredible) or maybe San Francisco or San Diego.

Are you driving across the US or flying? Would suggest grand canyon and rockies for sure

ETA: OK I see no car. Flight wise new orleans to dallas or houston is super easy and cheap. Then fly to denver and make your way into the rocky mountains. Denver fly to vegas and see the grand canyon on a tour

I would not mind seeing the JFK stuff in Dallas and eating Texan food but I heard negative things about Dallas for a tourist.

Dealey Plaza, where JFK was shot, is an interesting place. They have a museum on the 6th floor of the former Texas School Book Depository with a lot of information and artifacts and the window where Oswald was perched in enclosed in glass.

I would like to go to one or two of the national parks but without a car they seem awkward to get to which is why I was thinking of doing a tour to the Grand Canyon from Vegas.

When I went to the Grand Canyon I rented a car in Vegas and drove there. Stopped at Hoover Dam along the way. I don't really care for organized tours in general but you can definitely find one to the GC from Vegas if that's what you want to do.

Would Dallas be the choice for Texas then?

IMO, yes. But plenty of people would probably say Houston or San Antonio.

quote:

I have never even thought of Denver. How do the Rocky Mountains compare in Denver to Canada because I might be going to Canada in 2019.

IMO, the Canadian Rockies are way more scenic than the Colorado Rockies.

Is the Grand Canyon still worth doing for a day trip from Vegas? It would be a long day but it goes to the South Rim which is the best bit. Only $89 for a round trip.

The Grand Canyon is arguably the USA's most famous natural landmark. If you're going to spend three weeks in the USA I think it's worth a day to see at least some part of it.

I’d skip Colorado and hit up Jackson Hole/Tetons/YellowStone.

I would too if it's practical for the OP and he wants to devote the time and money to getting there.

Hm, no DC? I’d not want to spend 3 weeks in the US without a day or two in DC.
Yes to the Grand Canyon, yes to San Francisco.

Can you rent a car? Not sure how that works for foreigners.

If you can rent a car, I would fly from MSY to Denver and rent a car. Spend a day or two in Denver, then drive to LA. This would be my itinerary:

Denver > Breckenridge > Leadville > Salida > Ouray/Telluride. Stop for some day hikes on the trails or 14ers (Grays Peak, Mt Massive, Mt Elbert, Mt Sneffels). There are hostels in every one of these towns you can sleep for cheap. Aspens will be golden that time of year. Half a dozen National Forests on that stretch and the San Juan Mountain range is one of America's treasures.

Telluride > Moab UT. Once in UT you have the Might 5 National Parks (Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce, and Zion). Canyons, hoodoos, slot canyons, rock formations that will blow your mind. Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument next to Bryce is awesome too. Pick one or two to explore for a few days.

While in the area a few other places to consider: Buckskin Gulch, Coyote Buttes, Antelope Canyon, and The Wave. Google all of them, they are insane places that will blow your mind as much as any of the NPs.

Then swing by Grand Canyon south rim (north rim closes around 10/15). Hike down a few miles on South Kaibab or Bright Angel to soak in the experience.

Then head to Vegas for a day and then the hop skip and jump over to LA for your wrasslin.

If you don't give a shite about mountains and canyons or can't rent a car, then I would fly from MSY to San Diego. Hang out in Gas Lamp, Tijuana, Mission Beach, Pac Beach. Then head to LA.

New Orleans, Grand Canyon, Vegas, Los Angeles are obvious.

Some good stops along the way, though, would be:
Scott, LA for some boudin

Austin, TX for some BBQ and live music

San Antonio, TX for the River Walk

Phoenix to bang sluts at Arizona State

Once you make it to California, you could drive the Coast Road up to San Francisco, visit Sequoia, or even go all the way up from San Francisco to Portland, OR and Seattle, WA and end your trip up there.

Obviously, eventually, you'll have to come back to the states to get a tour of the northeast, hitting up DC, Philly, NYC, Boston, and Maine. Or maybe a midwest trip to see Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Nashville, and Memphis.

With your time frame, I think doing more in California would be a no brainer. If you can’t rent a car, there are a few companies that do tours of the coast and Yosemite. This way you could see San fransisco (top 3 city IMO for someone to see in the US who is not from here), hit an amazing national park and do the California coast on your way back to LA.

This way you will get the beach in Miami, the culture in New Orleans, and see a lot of the different scenery that The west coast has to offer.

If you decide to do a Texas City, Austin is your best bet and you can take a $12 megabus from New Orleans to Austin.

If staying in hostels, stay at The Atlas House in New Orleans for personalized pub crawls and then the Green Tortoiuse in SF.

Hey.

I've seen your comments in the thread on the OT where you've done nothing but bash the US, our culture, and society.

How about you keep your arse in the UK, you frick.

#3 Los Angeles/San Diego
#4 Miami/Key West
#5 Las Vegas/Grand Canyon

If you like giant museums and history

Washington DC
