UK Rock band drop ‘British’ from name.
Posted by hrryhll on 8/10/21 at 7:21 am
The UK band British Sea Power have changed their name to Sea Power, to avoid connotations with “isolationist, antagonistic nationalism”.
In a statement on their website, they say the original name was borne of “the elementary power of the oceans”, along with a reference to British naval supremacy made with “wry humour. The idea of British sea power in the historical sense was an obsolete thing. It was now just the name of a rock band. Now, 20 years later, we’re recasting the name. In recent times there’s been a rise in a certain kind of nationalism in this world – an isolationist, antagonistic nationalism that we don’t want to run any risk of being confused with. It’s become apparent that it’s possible to misapprehend the name British Sea Power, particularly if someone isn’t familiar with the band or their recordings.”
The band – based across Sussex, Cumbria and western Scotland – underlined their love for Britain: “We all feel immensely fortunate to have grown up in these islands. Several or our songs are filled with love and awe for this place. We do love these lands … We’ve always been internationalist in our mindset, something made clear in songs like Waving Flags, an anthem to pan-European idealism. We always wanted to be an internationalist band but maybe having a specific nation state in our name wasn’t the cleverest way to demonstrate that.”
Playing a strident take on indie rock, Sea Power released their debut album in 2003, and have released seven albums in all. Their biggest chart success came with 2008’s Do You Like Rock Music?, which reached No 10 in the album chart and was nominated for the Mercury prize. They have toured with bands including the Killers, and have recorded four soundtracks – the most recent, for video game Disco Elysium, won a Bafta Game award in 2020 for best music.
The sextet’s first album since 2017, Everything Was Forever, will be released in February 2022, with a single, Two Fingers, out now.
Last year, US country artists Dixie Chicks and Lady Antebellum changed their names to the Chicks and Lady A respectively, to avoid connotations with the antebellum era in the US south, when slavery was permitted. The US post-hardcore band Slaves – not to be confused with the British punk duo – also announced they would be changing their name last year, while voicing support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Quinn makes history.
Posted by hrryhll on 8/6/21 at 5:36 pm
Canadian midfielder Quinn made history Friday as the first openly transgender and nonbinary athlete to win an Olympic medal. Canada defeated Sweden 3-2 in penalties to claim gold in the women's soccer final in the Tokyo Olympics.
The team battled from a 1-0 deficit during the game only to tie and later win it all in penalty kicks.
Even before the game, Quinn's appearance in the Tokyo Olympics was historic. They, along with New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard and American skateboarder Alana Smith, were the first openly transgender and nonbinary athletes to compete in the Olympics. Quinn and Smith were the first nonbinary athletes to partake in the Games. Hubbard was the first openly transgender woman to participate. Chelsea Wolfe is a transgender woman who qualified as an alternate for the United States' BMX freestyle team in Tokyo, but did not compete.

Everyone agrees Trans Women are Women.

The International Olympic Committee has praised the weightlifter Laurel Hubbard’s “courage and tenacity” as she prepares to become the first transgender athlete to compete in an Olympics on Monday. The IOC’s medical and science director, Dr Richard Budgett, said “everyone agrees that trans women are women”.
Hubbard’s participation in Tokyo has proved controversial with her supporters hailing it as a historic moment for trans rights with the IOC’s critics believing that the 42-year-old New Zealander, who had never competed internationally until transitioning at 35, has an unfair and substantial advantage.
Budgett accepted that the issue was “large, difficult and complex”, but backed Hubbard’s right to compete.“To put it in a nutshell, the IOC had a scientific consensus back in 2015,” he said. “There are no IOC rules or regulations around transgender participation. That depends on each international federation. So Laurel Hubbard is a woman, is competing under the rules of her federationand we have to pay tribute to her courage and tenacity in actually competing and qualifying for the Games.”
While Budgett appeared to accept Hubbard had an advantage from going through male puberty, he stressed that inclusivity was an important factor too. “There are lots of aspects of physiology and anatomy, and the mental side, that contribute to an elite performance,. It’s very difficult to say, ‘yes, she has an advantage because she went through male puberty,’ when there’s so many other factors to take into account,” he said.

Olympic commentators in trouble for misgendering.
Posted by hrryhll on 7/28/21 at 5:18 pm
Two of the BBC's Olympic commentary team have been slammed for repeatedly misgendering the first openly non-binary athlete to compete at the games.
Team USA star Alana Smith, who uses they/them pronouns was knocked out of the Women's Street Skateboarding semi-finals after failing to score three tricks at Ariake Urban Sports Park in Tokyo.
Despite the Arizonian 20-year-old wearing a 'pronoun pin' and having 'they/them' written twice on their skateboard, they were repeatedly referred to as 'she' and 'her' by the BBC's Ed Leigh and Marc Churchill.
Many skateboarding fans noticed the error, and took to Twitter to complain, with one writing: 'Alana Smith literally had their pronouns on their skateboard and the BBC commentators still misgendered them, is is that hard?'.
‘I find this quite hard to watch, in Poe Pinson, you had a really great skate who she was fighting for an Olympic place against. Alana Smith is a great skater but she's got no comp results from the last year,' commentator Marc Churchill, himself a professional skateboarder, said.
'And she could potentially have focused on park. To come out here and Ollie [a skateboarding trick where the rider and board leap into the air without the use of the rider's hands] a course.... maybe she's carrying an injury,' he added.
‘It's getting away from her again. She's gonna throw it. She certainly isn't approaching the course gingerly,' Ed Leigh, the BBC's snowboarding correspondent added.
BBC source told FEMAIL the presenters made an 'honest mistake' as 'errors occur with a live broadcast'.
Dozens of fans tweeted complaining about the presenters using the wrong pronouns.
'Watching #Tokyo2020 women's skateboarding on the BBC and hearing the commentators constantly misgender Alana Smith and not use they/them pronouns when it's literally written on their board is so irritating and disappointing,' said one.
‘BBC commentators are just... determined not to use Alana Smith's pronouns,' added another.
‘To the BBC commentators. Alana Smith has they/them on their skateboard and goes by that. I'm sure it's not done in malice, but just a note,' wrote a third.
Responding to one fan, Tim Warwood, who also presents skateboarding coverage for the BBC but wasn't part of the coverage said he was 'sure it wasn't intentional' and that the BBC team presenting from Media City in Salford, Manchester have limited resources.
'I'm sure the boys would of course apologise to Alana,' he wrote.
'I hadn't seen anything regarding gender and I'm 100 per cent sure they hadn't either. Hence the mistake.
'If you don't come across a skater that much then you rely on information provided to you by the event organiser,'
'Not saying it was missed out I'm sure it was there, but personally I didn't see it, and the guys are back in Salford with limited resources.'
Alana made history aged 12 when they became the youngest medallist in X Games history after snagging a silver medal in Barcelona 2013 for the Women's Park Contest.
Alana and Canadian football player Quinn (who is known by just one name) are the first two Olympians to be openly non-binary.
Quinn, 25, came out as nonbinary and transgender via Instagram last year and uses the pronouns they/them.
This is games marked the debut of skateboarding as an Olympic sport - yet another sign that an activity once embraced as a symbol of counter-culture has firmly joined the mainstream.
Skateboarding joins surfing and sports climbing at the Tokyo Olympics this summer with organisers and broadcasters hoping the new events will draw new and younger audiences to the Games.
Unlike more traditional Olympic events, park and street skateboarding competitions will be accompanied by loud music and held at a new course built on Tokyo's waterfront.

Piers Morgan accused of racism for criticising Simone Biles.
Posted by hrryhll on 7/28/21 at 2:35 pm
Piers Morgan has attracted another storm of criticism after lashing out against yet another high-profile woman of colour.
This time, it’s after he said it was a “joke” that decorated US Olympic gymnast Simone Biles withdrew from Tuesday’s women’s team final for mental health reasons.
Earlier in the day Ms Biles, the most successful US gymnast of all time, announced she wouldn’t be participating in the upcoming women’s team gymnastics final after coming in for the worst vault score in her storied career. She said the pressure of being the world’s pre-eminent gymnast was causing her mental health to deteriorate, leaving her worried she’d leave the Games “on a stretcher.”
“I don’t trust myself as much anymore. Maybe it’s getting older. There were a couple of days when everybody tweets you and you feel the weight of the world,” she said of the decision. “‘We’re not just athletes. We’re people at the end of the day and sometimes you just have to step back. I didn’t want to go out and do something stupid and get hurt. ?I feel like a lot of athletes speaking up has really helped.”
This decision apparently irked the former Good Morning Britain host, who suggested she wasn’t being sincere and was merely upset over a “poor performance.”
“Are ‘mental health issues’ now the go-to excuse for any poor performance in elite sport? What a joke,” Morgan wrote on Twitter. “Just admit you did badly, made mistakes, and will strive to do better next time. Kids need strong role models not this nonsense.”
The comments were quickly criticised, with people arguing Morgan has a penchant for targeting Black women struggling with mental health, following previous digs at tennis star Naomi Osaka and Meghan Markle after they shared their own experiences.
“Once again Piers Morgan has shown he has no respect for black women, going out of his way whenever he can to be nasty to any high profile black woman who struggle with their mental health,” wrote British DJ Jumpin Jack Frost.
Others, like writer David Gardner, pointed out how the TV presenter had defended other public figures struggling with mental health, like footballer Paul Gascoigne, while labelling Ms Osaka an “arrogant spoiled brat” and “petulant little madam” for withdrawing from the French Open for mental health reasons.
“Piers Morgan has repeatedly defended Paul Gascoigne during his mental health struggles,” Mr Gardner tweeted. “But he won’t extend the same sympathy to Naomi Osaka, Meghan Markle or Simone Biles. I wonder why.”
One cheeky Twitter user noted that like Biles, Morgan famously walked away from his job at a key moment, during an on-air row with his co-hosts about his comments about the Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Morgan had said he “didn’t believe a word” of what Ms Markle said in the interview, where she spoke of racism and suicidal thoughts during her time as a royal.
The presenter left ITV in March, and later conceded that it was “not for me to question if she felt suicidal.”
The Independent is attempting to reach Morgan for comment on this story.

Argentina rolls out new ID Cards
Posted by hrryhll on 7/22/21 at 1:01 pm
Argentina has become the first country in South America to introduce identification cards for people who are non-binary.
From July 21, people who do not identify as male or female can now put an “x” under gender in their national ID document and passports.
It has joined countries - including New Zealand, Canada and Australia - which have already implemented the change.
President Alberto Fernandez said: “There are other ways to love and be loved.
“There are other identities apart from the identity of a man or a woman and they should be respected and they have always existed, only that in other times they were hidden.”
The Argentine leader gave his passionate speech at the presentation of the new document when he declared there are “a thousand ways to love and be loved and be happy.”
Before the changes, Argentinians had the right to identify themselves as gender neutral under national law.
However, this was not reflected in national documents and passports where they had to select “male” or “female.”
At a ceremony in Buenos Aires, Mr Fernandez delivered the first three ID cards using the new “x” format.
He was joined by Argentina’s interior minister and minister of women, gender and diversity.
Argentina’s centre-left government has advocated social reforms - such as legalising abortion - last year.
Mr Fernandez has been an advocate of progressive social reforms since he was elected in 2019.
Abortion was legalised under his leadership last year and he has also publicly championed his son Estanislao, a design student and a well-known drag queen.
“The ideal will be when all of us are just who we are and no one cares about people’s gender,” Mr Fernandez added.
“This is a step we are taking and I hope one day we get to the point where IDs don’t say if someone is a man, woman or anything else.”
International Civil Aviation Organization accepts the use of the “x” and includes people who identify outside traditional gender definitions.

World’s best shooter tests positive, no symptoms, misses Olympics.

Team GB’s world No1 skeet shooter Amber Hill said she was “devastated” after she was forced to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics following a positive Covid-19 test.
Hill, 23, tested positive in the UK and under government guidance must now isolate at home.
“There are no words to describe how I’m feeling right now,” she said. “After five years of training and preparation, I’m absolutely devastated to say that last night I received a positive Covid-19 test, meaning I’ve had to withdraw from Team GB’s shooting team.”
