No. But in court it does and should matter

Just because the car hit someone, doesnt mean its the cars fault......

what difference would it make?

Would it not assign blame? If the person was in a crosswalk, the car should have stopped as the law mandates. Uber would be liable. If the person walked into the street from behind a parked car, then it would just be ruled an accident. But Uber is fricked either way.

Out of ignorance, I'm going to ask a question so be gentle with the answer

Do these autonomous vehicles get tested on mock roadways with mannequins or test engineers before we put them on real roadways? I'm sure some sort of preliminary testing must be done, but not sure what the procedures are exactly.

Can you envision the Plaintiff's lawyers speeding to the scene? Will probably cause additional fatalities.

To her, not much of one.

To the concept/industry, a huge difference.

why?

the world is an imperfect place and i find myself often braking for people walking out into the street unexpectedly.

i guess in the Future autonomous cars will kill people who do that so they'll learn their lesson.

little billy better spend more time indoors wrapping up his ball catching abilities or Uber gonna get him!

No but believe it or not, humans driving cars actually do hit pedestrians too, not just the self-driving car.

The details on this case matter, we're not even sure if the car was at fault here.

It’s a valid question. The car may not have had time to stop if she stepped out into the road suddenly.

Are you intentionally acting dumb here and missing the mark?

I hope so for your sake.

Sure, it will suck when he hear a story of how it plows through a human instead of simply swerving and hitting a duck or whatever, but if it ultimately prevents more crashes/injury/death, I am all for it

It is all a numbers game. As long as the wrongful death or other injury claims aren't a huge strain on the bottom line, autonomous vehicles will prevail.

It may not have even been an instrumentation issue on the car. People need to slow their role on getting emotional about this story until details come out.

No, but if a person pops out at the last second and I can't stop, I shouldn't be charged with a crime.

also not beyond cad's thought process that shitty software is shitty software and you are sad if you are this ready to give up your safety to these cars.

i feel bad for your family pets and small children!

If little billy is your son, you should teach him reaction time and momentum. A car cants stop instantly

Any more details in the link?

Like... was she in a crosswalk with the right of way, or did she step out from in between two parked cars?

Active investigation to answer these questions.

Pretty sure he is.

I had to slam on my brakes not too long ago because some dumb bitch talking on her cell phone decided to cross the street in downtown BR without even bothering to check to see if traffic was coming. If she had done that half a second later, I'd have probably hit her... and that wouldn't have been my fault in the least.

It's not like the autonomous car is supposed to know when a pedestrian is going to do something stupid instead of staying on the sidewalk. And if she was between two parked cars (a bid no-no but people do it all the time) it might not have been able to pick her up until too late.
