Bumpity bump bump bump shell. Looks like CAD was right and the human wasn't remotely engaged.

Dashcam video was released Wednesday night showing the dramatic and deadly crash of a self-driving Uber SUV in Arizona — as the woman operating the vehicle had her head down.
But but but.. The driver couldn't stop in time either! Cad is an idiot for saying she wasn't paying attention
dashcam video says hi
Woman "driver" on left, victim right

That has nothing to do with the automated car. I would have hit her to in that circumstance.
She was basically invisible until too late.

Yeah. Pretty much any driver would have hit that dumb arse trying to cross the street there.
I'm certainly not looking at this as a very big mark against self driving cars.

Did you watch the dash cam video?
You were absolutely wrong

As a surveillance expert I can tell you 100% that video is not the raw original video.

I thought this was one if the advantages of self driving cars? The sensors do not need light. The car was not blinded by the darkness and get it still failed to see a bike rider.

Are you saying it was actually a woman driving?

The car probably did detect the bike rider, and could have even slowed down, but if the bike rider was stationary. then stepped in front of the car in less time than it takes for the car to stop in the available distance, then the car is going to strike the bike rider regardless if it is a man, woman, or machine driving , just simple physics. I believe autonomous cars are already capable of operating safely, and producing a lower accident rate than that of the average human driver. If the expectation is zero accidents and fatalities then they might as will stop the program, its not going to ever operate at that level, but then neither do our airlines where the public has accepted the fact that there will be infrequent accidents.

She had crossed 3.75 lanes before being hit. Radar should have picked her up when she entered roadway and computers should have calculated an impact and began braking.

A human driver (not that fat POS along for the ride) would have seen that lady and slowed down ahead of time.
If we're going to have autonmous cars, may as well just have dedicated lanes for them. It will increase the efficiency if the entire roadway is autonomous. Have separate lanes for the people aren't pussies and still have the courage to drive.

From the dash footage, the victim wasn’t visible until she was right in front of the car which was traveling fast. Unless you have night vision, I don’t think many humans avoid this.

LOL at everyone who thinks the dascham is what human eyes see. Cameras are notoriously bad at picking up low-light details. And that's assuming that Uber didn't straight up manipulate the footage to make the resolution worse. Big assumption.

Who didn’t see this coming? Motion detection technology isn’t 100%.
Was this in a crosswalk or was she just running across the road illegally?

That's why I said "From the dash footage."

Cameras are also capable of behaving the exact opposite. I would hope that ones placed on autonomous vehicles would be able to do this. But all we have is this video that they released to go by. You can make assumptions either way.

radar and lidar don't work in the dark?

When did I say anything about that? I just said that if you just go by what the video shows, a human probably wouldn't have stopped in time either. It's debatable that the video may have been doctored or doesn't show what a human would have seen with the naked eye. The "driver" wasn't paying attention so it's hard to say either way.
Other technology should have spotted the person and stopped the car, so yeah, something is off.
