This may not seem like a big deal to those who don't pay attention (and judging from the threads on this board, no one is paying attention to Louisiana politics), but this is nothing short of a disaster.
Planning on sending your kid to LSU on TOPS? You're fricked. frickED. Our government has ceased to govern.

Small government conservatives.
Thanks Louisiana.
Thanks Louisiana.

You are blaming conservatives when the Dems wanted to tax us all into lower net income brackets? frick off.
Posted on 3/4/18 at 9:27 pm to Slippy
Good. Maybe they’ll finally re-write the constitution so that we don’t tie-up 90% of our funding.
Posted on 3/4/18 at 9:27 pm to mahdragonz
Except it’s tax and spend liberals, who have historically made up the majority of this state and are often times republicans hiding in disguise, who keep wanting to tax and tax and tax without even looking to change he constitution to allow for across the board cuts.

While it is a shitty joke, TOPS shouldn't be held up as the standard for governing. TOPS is a Bernie-ish luxury, and we are a poor and low-tax state

TOPS is a luxury the state can't afford to provide.

lol that you think both aren’t responsible.

The responses are indicative of the problem. It's partisanship. Tribalism.
As long as we continue blaming the other team, nothing will happen. Ever. We will continue being the banana republic that everyone in America thinks we are.
The legislature is a deliberative body. Legislation is built on compromise. If you run on a platform of never compromising, then you are contributing to failure, stagnation and decay. Congrats.

Sounds like the government just did you a favor. Maybe now instead of pinching pennies to send your kid to an overpriced devalued degree mill for 4 years, you'll send them to get a welding certificate so they can earn more with no debt.
What a concept.
What a concept.

This is no surprise. We've learned to accept failure in Louisiana.

Naw man. $300 million ain't that much when the objective is to build an educated, trained workforce. To lift people to a higher station. it's not that much at all.
The people in this state can't even agree on whether this is a good investment or not. We are doomed.

They've beaten that dead horse of an idea for over 50 years now. Thrown tax money after "building an educated workforce" for decade after decade. Zero return on the investment. Insanity is repeating the same actions and expecting a different result.
If we as a state want things to change then we have to change things and not keep doing the same thing over and over.
P.S.
You can't lift people to a higher station that don't want to be lifted. They are too content to float along soaking up the freebies and staying stuck in the mud.

Mississippi has never had a TOPS program and look where our state is today.

No one should ever plan on TOPS being in place.

House Republican leaders favor sales taxes, while Democrats, particularly the Black Caucus, prefer income taxes.

A combination of hardcore anti tax republicans and the black caucus killed the bills. It was weird seeing them on the same side.
Going to be interesting to see how it is spun to put this all on the Republicans.

Heard the Legislative Black Caucus got PO’d because they-being the hardcore Republicans-tied the tax to Medicare reform. But in reality, it’s a bunch of hyperventilating children.
They’re arguing over what should be pointless. What keeps them in office is the arguing and, “the other,” that they blame everything on while avoiding the need to structurally reform our form of government via Constitutional Convention.
They’re ignoring the forest for the sake of the tree, and our media has less vision than even they do. It’s sad, really...

lol.
Much to my disdain, they actually had some compromises going with JBE and it's the black caucus that blew up the special session to remind JBE who's boss here in the democrat party.
It's amazing that JBE's approval numbers is holding itself above water and his entire legislative agenda is in completely destroyed ruins right now.
