It's cold as frick so that keeps me away but my brother lives there and loves it.
Chicago suburbs are still Ferris Buhler level awesome. There's quaint old school towns to the south. There are good urban areas to live in but it comes at a hefty price. It's easy for people to stay in a bubble that is insulated from all the homicides, especially if they can afford private schools because the crime is sorta segregated much like it is here in Baton Rouge as opposed to being patchwork like NOLA.
The food options in Chicago proper are incredibly good but that's pretty much true about any very large international city now days. They've got dense populations of many different types of ethnicities. Plenty of Asian varieties.
The jobs pay pretty well, especially for skilled labor.
Now back to the cold. It's too intense for me but a lot of people don't mind it. The summers up there are awesome and people there really appreciate the summers a great deal.

Been this way for a long time. My mother and her older brother went to a high school on the south-west side that was largely in a nearly all-white working-class neighborhood. In the early 70s, they started busing kids in from other neighborhoods to diversify schools.
Needless to say, there was a massive race riot the first week which resulted in a bus fully occupied that ended up being flipped. I can't confirm or deny my uncle participated in helping to flip the bus.

Downtown is great. They even have a Nutella Restaurant. Transportation is good
Southwest to Nola can be had for $49 each way.

Was there for the first time ever last weekend.
Fun city but holy frick was it cold. And it wasn't even that bad (temps in high 20's low 30's). The wind is brutal. I lived in NYC for 5 years and it wasn't even comparable
I'd go again the summer but no desire to ever visit again in the winter. Spent some time in Wriglyville and it would be awesome to go to a game. Also really want to do Lolla

As far as a city to visit in the summer, it’s awesome. So much to do and see.

I disagree. I was there for 5 days and was a witness to 3 shooting INSIDE the loop!
But I did really enjoy the city and food. It was just so dang cold

Nutella Restaurant.
I really hope this was not the highlight of your time. That place was so underwhelming. They took already made pastries and put Nutella of them. I can do that at home

Yeah my gf took me there too. We paid $9 for sliced fruit to dip in Nutella . Coffee was mediocre

I would never eat there. But I was surprised. It was packed.

Why is it so great for young people? Just curious
It just seems to be slammed with thousands of young professionals right out of B1G and small midwest schools. Insane amounts of great restaurants and bars. I was always jealous when I visited friends who lived there. But, I would think paying through the nose to live in a box would get old after a while and it's the type of place that can be difficult to enjoy unless you're a baller.

I worked there for consulting gigs with durations of a few months a little more than 10 years ago and had a good time.
Then stayed there for the LSU opener last year and had a great time. Good food, Cubs baseball during a championship year, went to Sears/Willis Tower for the first time since 1983.
Edit: I like foods from all over the world and you can find anything in Chicago. It’s on a level with NYC in that respect. I had an Indian dosa restaurant in the NW suburbs and an Ethiopian restaurant in the city.

It's so nice

Wife and I went last year in late March and stayed near the Hancock Tower. Downtown was immaculate, not what I was expecting, totally opposite of New Orleans. Of course we did all the touristy eating options and Chinatown. We walked around at night on back streets and never once felt like you do in NOLA having to look over your shoulder. The city is really segregated and the trash obviously doesn't live on the next block. We really enjoyed our stay and will return in the late spring / early summer to attend Cubs game. It was reasonably priced when you compare it to NY. It was cold though and the wind really is cutting. I can't imagine the days in the single digits and blowing snow. The other thing I noticed was how many good looking women there that smoked. They weren't tourists b/c they were always outside of lofts / businesses etc..., maybe it's a northern thing ?

Get ready for a bunch of people who have never been north of I-10 to say how dangerous it is and how they’d never live there.
Chicago is an amazing city. It’s cleaner than New York and the COL is very reasonable for a large city.

Chicago is awesome, but I could never live there with a third of the year being uncomfortably cold. I was there in mid October and the cold wind off the lake was brutal.

I actually agree. But for the bitter winters, I would absolutely love in Chicago. But even living in New England, those winters are brutal.

One of the greatest places on planet earth in the summer for a person fresh out of college up to early '30's or so. I would want no part of it in the winter and I'd rather live in suburbia above the age of 35.
Well said! I could quibble a smidge, but I'll allow it in full.

For anyone who was born in the 50s or early 60s, it’s part of their life.
Peter Cetera still performs at a decent level.
Not specifically my cup of tea but there were worse musical groups at the time they were popular.

One of the best places to live in the world from April to October. A frozen hellscape from November to March.
