Lately Amazon has become more difficult to trust when shopping for unfamiliar brands. Something as simple as a phone cable can have listings from dozens of sellers. They often have unique branding but otherwise look nearly identical in the photos and product descriptions.

Some photos show what appears to be an Amazon approved symbol in the photo, making you feel that the product is legit. Also, many products now have a confusing “Amazon Choice” label which really is related to ordering through Alexa and not actual product reviews.

The review process is also getting worse, as some new companies offer full reimbursement promotions if you leave them 5 star reviews. Not to mention one star ratings based on a shipping error and not the actual product.

Amazon Prime continues to be a great value, but I find myself having to spend more and more time discerning over competitively priced products that shouldn’t take a lot of mental effort to buy.

I haven't had issues. You just have to do your research, which you should do on most purchases.

So it’s just like shopping anywhere else?

Agree. It’s very hard to trust ratings now that so many sellers are giving free/cheap products in exchange for reviews. Every single product is now the best thing ever.

Never saw the Amazon hype. I have bought a few things from AMazon, but do better buying specific items from specific companies.

I was on Amazon this morning saying the same thing.

Many of the reviews are now not even actual legit reviews. The seller is finding ways to write 5 star reviews of their own product.

I try to thoroughly read reviews, and look for the ones where a customer uploaded their own photo, showing me they actually bought the product.

I've been returning more things than typical lately, as well.

Did you receive your product for free or at a discounted rate? Is this your unbiased opinion? Where have all the cowboys gone?

And some of the unknowns end up being pretty quality.

I suspect most people didn't know WTF Anker, Aukey or RavPower were a few years ago, yet all of them are considered highly reliable yet affordable tech brands now.

It would be easier if they could tighten up standards a bit more, or at least crack down on fake reviews.

use fakespot.com , it does a good job of letting you know if it believes the amazon reviews are fakes.

I use this site for reviewing the reviews.

I was ordering some phone wires yesterday and one of the items came back with 100% of reviews being fake.

The issue isn’t specific to Amazon. There is a large number of (primarily) Chinese companies putting cables on that market under numerous names. The goal is to create confusion about reliability of products. Amazon shows this more due to the breadth of their stock.

Do your research on independent sites and it shouldn’t be a problem.

That’s the thing about some of these free stuff for good review deals. They actually have a rubric which often will ask you to include product photos, and then require you to send screen shots.

I typically try to use a product for a few months before I consider leaving a review. Confirming the device works out of the box is about the only review anyone could actually write after a day or so.

There are actually a few sites with algorithms that try and look for products with potentially sketchy reviews.

Bought a phone charge cord from Amazon like 2 months ago with no issues. Clicked the amazon recommended product. It was like 1/4 the cost of buying it in the store, plus they sent two of them.

I’ve been using Amazon less and less. In addition to the cheap crap, they have a lot of counterfeit items.

Good to know... I'll just stick to my typical orders then and not try to go outside of the box. Plus if I ever want to make a big electronic or other purchase, I do try and google the item and read 3rd party review sites.

I just can't give up the convenience that is Amazon, and the ease to return things is not a huge bother for me.
