The Trump administration proposed Monday to have the Department of Agriculture prepare and send packages of food directly to low-income families, replacing a portion of their food stamp benefits.

The proposal, new in the White House fiscal 2019 budget, is for families to receive some of their benefits “in the form of a USDA Foods package, which would include items such as shelf-stable milk, ready-to-eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish.”

The package would replace a portion of traditional Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for families receiving more than $90 in benefits a month as a way of saving money, increasing the nutritional value of benefits, and cracking down on fraud.

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. So much fraud with this stuff. The truly needy families are being boxed in with the scammers. Not fair on many levels.

I’m good with this. Good policy if distribution costs don’t eat up savings from fraud.

75% of the time I offer food (instead of $) to the begging homeless guy, I get an eat shite look.

I bet the results here are similar.

Account for a family without a stable address. Or a family that's effectively homeless. Or a family that has their 'food parcel' stolen from their doorstep. Or a package that's lost in the mail.

Guess Americans can starve so you can live out your ignorant Randian fantasies, eh?

i like it.
it would be more cost effective to warehouse it at a DC and have people come pick up direct rather than door to door service, but i still like it.

Wow, I have been saying that for years followed by "the government would never consider doing that, though." They still won't, but someone proposing it is crazy. Would cut down on fraud for sure though.

Even if it's a net wash it will be better over the long run. Think of all the people who will go out and get jobs because they can't get free junk food and booze any more.

I'll add, if he government is going to feed you, they absolutely get to dictate what you get. Don't like it? Get a job.

I like it. Should also block sugary drinks, candy, and junk food from EBT purchases.
