Idiots in this country, who have no grasp of history, would be shocked to know that slavery was around before the United States ever existed, and that humans of all races have been enslaved.

In fact, there are 30 million or more slaves in the world today -- more than made the passage to the New World.

And 10 times more than ever landed on the shores of the United States.

Modern Slavery

Theres a good sized sex slave trade going on in the world. Guess what? Overwhelmingly those sex slaves ARE NOT Africans

It's also racist that people don't want black sex slaves.

Yep, and it'd also be racist if people did want black sex slaves.

Slavery is about who is the lowest on the pecking order. At that time is was African peoples. African peoples who themselves were the lowest hanging fruit on their continent. And delivered up by their African neighbors. For profit

Throughout history, slavery was just something you did to conquered peoples. It sucked, but it wasn't discriminatory as a rule. Honestly, the further back you go, the more it was kind of a win/win: the conquerer profits off the conquered, and the conquered doesn't get wiped off the face of the earth.

I would say slavery as practiced by the USA was racist.

Now, sanctioned slavery in the States by citizens was racist.

I'm going to guess that the dude in the doctor's office in the American south wasn't talking about sex slavery or native American slavery

Which I think you also suspect

That should have been the first and only response to this thread.

But Nooooooo. That's asking too much of this board.

Yep. If you can't even acknowledge that fricking SLAVERY in America was racist then you really are a disgusting human being. Just pathetic.

It is - ironically, when the black vote starts to cleave, say 75/25 or 70/30 - that will be a signal that "black folks have arrived and are diverse enough of political opinion to be considered to be casting independent, rather than bloc votes" AND the demise of the power of the race hustlers who will no longer be able to deliver reliable voting herds of black folks.

It will be a truly banner day for a lot of very good reasons.

Except the question is far more complicated than that. Sure, it's easy to say this, but it's also so wrong on so many levels.

That's like saying that black folks aren't doing well, collectively, in 2018 because of racism. Sure that's easy to say and clearly virtue signaling.

But it's both wrong and counterproductive on so many levels you cannot imagine it.

CT, I think you took me too literally on the quoted sentence and perhaps didn't consider the rest of the post. What I am getting at is that our American paradigm for understanding "racism" is driven primarily by black/white relations in this country. Slavery, followed by Jim Crow, Civil Rights era, and down to the present day. Even our civil rights laws were made to secure rights "for the Negro," with national origin and even gender blended in to the process. Of course, other groups have experienced racism, but when we as Americans talk about "racism," it's the history of black-white relations that primarily informs our understanding.

You seem to have missed that I referred to slavery as an ancient and varied institution. Slavery has existed, and continues to exist, in very different forms, but it's the peculiar institution of American chattel slavery that most Americans think of and it's the reaction to that institution that informs our understanding of racism.

And this is all true and illustrates the lunacy of the position that everything, essentially, is racist or all negative outcomes are the byproduct (or intended outcome) of racism.

Dilutes the word beyond any meaning. Which is bad, because it is an important word.

Yeah because southern racism towards blacks began AFTER slavery.

How about this - folks from Greece, the ME and North Africa sold themselves into slavery to the Romans - in some cases to provide for their family (family might have debts, ne'er do well son trying to make good, etc.), or, particularly in the Greek situation, they were in high demand, could negotiate for better conditions, higher payment, and many wanted to immigrate to Rome because it was exciting, dynamic and being a slave there seemed better than a free person in decaying, dying Greece.

Just as some other examples of how "slavery" means more than "Southern white people = demons; everyone else = Saints."

How do you explain many black families owning slaves in America?

“It is a very sad aspect of African-American history that slavery sometimes could be a colorblind affair,”

If its sometimes color blind then the man is at least partially correct.

This isn't about your feels. This is about actual definitions and meanings of words.

Something can be awful, horrific and mind-numbingly bad. And still not be racist.

I think it's a valid discussion, and a very complicated issue. I don't think being on either side of the discussion makes you an awful human being.

But, in typical liberal fashion, anyone with an opposing viewpoint is a racist, terrible person.
