I paid my moms mortgage payment and all my own bills. Helped out with groceries. I was seldom home though.

I moved in with my parents after grad school for about 3.5 months until my job started. They didn't charge me anything because I was waiting on my start date. Then I moved in with my sister for about 3 months after I started work, and she didn't charge me anything either. However, I do help out with groceries, babysit her kids every now and again, and bought them a nice dinner for Christmas. I'll buy them another one as I'm moving out this weekend.
We're family so I was allowed to stay for free as I started my career, but none of us are trashy and we all know we'd do the same for the other were they in that situation.

It was years ago but my final exam was on Dec 12 and I started my job on Dec 13th. About the 10th of Jan my parents told me they were going to start charging rent in Feb. Little did they know I had already looked at apts and had a move in day scheduled for that Sat. The following Jan I moved out of state and for the next 12 years I would see them once or rarely twice a year. Enjoy them while you can.

I don't get why anyone would live at home if their parents were charging rent. Money is the only reason to live at home.

My parents don't charge me.
I've always done chores and handiwork around the house since I was young and not thrown a bitch fit about it like some people

To answer OP question directly- how much to charge... I would look at the going rate for midling 3 bedroom apartment in the area and charge 1/3.

I'd never charge my kids rent but I'd also never let them live with me after school is over

Slightly off topic but these conversations generally center around a boy living at home, seems alot more acceptable for a girl.
On that note, one of my best friends just kicked his 20 year old daughter out. He started doing rent a year ago, she could never hold a job more than a few weeks so never had rent, so he kicked the little girl out.
Abaracadabara.... like magic..... she is now holding a steady job and paying her rent on her own...
Kids know how to manipulate their parents from birth.
Especially daughters to their daddies.

How many good boy points do you get for paying rent?
Posted on 1/23/18 at 7:36 pm to LanierSpots
I know a guy who collects rent from his kids but puts it away for them to have when they move out. That's a pretty solid solution and incentive IMO.
ETA - the kid doesn't know it's being saved for him.

The summer of 1982 I paid my brother $100/month to sleep on his couch in Littleton, CO and eat dinner every night. I was working construction out there and graduated college the next Spring. Couldn't find a decent job in Hooterville that summer. Could have stayed at my parents for nothing, and not worked. Saved $1K that I applied to the student loan debt.

If I were to do something like this I would put it in an account to give to them when they were ready to buy a home.

I'm currently living with my parents while I finish up my masters. They don't "charge" me anything. I take 18hrs a semester and work full time every summer to earn my spending money. My parents are pretty young, so it doesn't bother them too much that I'm doing this. My sister is already out the house and off the payroll. I will be out of the house and financially dependent by the time my parents are 52.
