Why would they be worried? It's essentially an unscheduled paid vacation

Government employees will probably get paid retroactively, that's how it's always worked before.

Bad thing is that for contractors like me, it's simply authorized leave. I must take vacation.

No doubt government needs to be slashed by at least half. Between the early and ridiculous retirements and the fact that we have so many who are corrupt, it's time to cut the fat and cut our losses so less people are in position to be corrupt. Today's government is all about making their jobs easier with higher pay. The people have to be out in force just to beat the numbers in a tax hike election. Too many government employees voting yes on all new taxes. Today's politicians also concentrate too much on social issues. We just need infrastructure and national defense. Leave everything else up to the people. STOP SENDING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO PEOPLE LIKE IRVIN MAYFIELD (though he is one grain of sand on the corruption beach).

Why would they be worried, always turns in to a paid vacation without having to use leave.

Correct me if I am wrong, but on the news this morning, I think I heard them say that if the government shuts down people who work at USPS and a few other departments will have to work, but will not be paid.

How does that work? Can you make people go to work and not pay them?

There was numerous emails yesterday about it with the "We fully expect Congress to pass a funding bill to avoid a government shutdown" statement.

So far today...crickets. I don't really care at this point. There is a conference starting on Monday that I have to attend no matter what.

Do state or city employees need to worry or only federal?

Our timesheets were due this week.

We've heard nothing here. But on the way home I'm stocking up on flaky biscuits (when I'm at home I make those for breakfast instead of paying for donuts on my way into work).
