I’m a sophomore in HS. I was invited to visit it. Just wanted to know what everyone thought about it in general.

I know that there are threads about this already, but I wanted a more recent perspective.

Total PITA if you're looking at engineering.

Do get a sweet stipend however.

What's your ACT score?

Cool classes, good professors (particularly for basic sciences), looks good for grad/professional school applications. Highly recommended.

Did your parents give you permission to post here? If so, I'm calling CPS.

Daughter (no pics) in the Honors College. You get first pick for all of your classes. The Honors Dorm is really nice. There is extra work involved of course but overall she feels like it is worth it.

It’s worthless except for getting you a good dorm Freshman year and getting you priority scheduling your 1st 2 years

The small seminar classes were the best part of college (regarding actual coursework).

If you're going to do engineering you might as well try for the engineering dorms instead of honors. You still get small classes and priority if they offer it in the classroom downstairs, but without the added work that honors requires

Okay... I'm an Honors alum (though it was a looooong time ago). I can help you.

Here's the deal. Do not do Honors classes in high school or college if you want some sort of "reward" for doing it. To be truthful, the non-educational rewards are few. Priority scheduling? Nice. Exclusive dorms? Nice. That's about it.

You don't get any other pats on the head for going Honors.

What you do get are more challenging and deeper classes, with more reading, more class discussion, and more access to your teachers. If that is what you are looking for, then the Honors College is for you. Several posters have advised that it's a no-go for engineers. I would tend to believe them. Honors classes are driven mostly toward the humanities, generally speaking.

If you intend to go to graduate school, Honors courses offer a nice little preview, though it's not exact. My experience with the LSU Honors College was (and still is) overwhelmingly positive. I would recommend it to students who want to go deeper than the usual undergraduate survey courses in history, English, and literature. You will also meet other students like you in the Honors College. Everyone finds their tribe at LSU. That's where you will find yours.

I did honors college my freshman year and stayed in West laville honors dorm. This was 2006. I was able to get priority scheduling. Outside of that, it was ultimately more work for virtually zero benefits. And it definitely never mattered when it came to looking for a job. I was in engineering..

Do you have a life besides school? If not, then honors college is for you.
