Why do you carry a sidearm while deer hunting?

Trying to prove a point to someone that a sidearm is always good to have.

So if a bear comes up on you do you shoot him with the high powered rifle or a pistol?

Nope...but if one is hunting me, I want to at least be able to shoot something that makes a lot of noise...while running

If someone feels like they HAVE to carry a pistol during bow season, fine.

I can't comprehend why someone would need a pistol while they have a rifle or a shotgun. I guess I'm just not tactical minded.

I always thought it was illegal to carry any firearm other than a long gun during gun season, and that it was illegal to have any type of firearm on you during bow season.

So can someone straighten this out for me?

Why would a pistol be illegal during gun season? I think bow season depend on the state.

Read the regulations. Allowing a pistol during bow season changed 2 years ago for private land and last year for public. It is slightly confusing because they don't tell you what you CAN carry, they state what you CANNOT carry. ..........XDS 9mm for me.

They say Handguns are used to fight your way to a long gun.

So carrying a long gun to then use a hand gun has me confused.

That's why I'm asking. I've always thought it would be a good idea to have a .22 pistol to put a deer down if the first shot doesn't do the job. Shooting again with a high powered rifle or shotgun just wastes meat.

I unload my rifle completely when leaving my stand. Also, having a "backpack style" sling, it would take too long if a coyote or worse came at me.

I only carry a sidearm if I’m hunting hogs with my bow. I shoot a longbow, so I often need the backup.

I don’t know why anyone would bother carrying a handgun while gun hunting for deer.

I've practiced high intensity shooting with my pistol at under 10 yards. I have not practiced with my rifle.

Where I hunt there are a bunch of coyotes. So my pistol with 9 rounds is a better bet than my break action rifle.

Dad has been charged by hogs before sunrise walking to one of our stands. I’ll take my chance with a semiauto pistol vs a bolt action rifle especially when light is hard to come by.
