BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

BRPD Deputy Chief of Police David Hamilton has been ousted from that coveted position but will remain on the force as a sergeant.

The move comes just days before Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome is expected to name a new Chief of Police for the department.

Interim Baton Rouge Police Chief Jonathan Dunnam made the decision regarding Hamilton, who has put in the deputy chief role exactly three years ago today.

The deputy chief of police position requires an evaluation by the police chief every three years to determine if that person will remain in the position for another three years.

Dunnam says he evaluated Hamilton and informed him Tuesday that he would no longer be in that role.

“I just feel like it’s best if the new chief chooses who is best for that position,” Dunnam said. “I don’t want to tie the hands of the new chief by appointing him (Hamilton) to a new three-year position if he might not be the person the new chief wants,” Dunnam added.

Hamilton’s pay will also be reduced but WAFB is awaiting a response about what the new pay rate will be.

Starting in 2018, BRPD will move from having just one deputy chief to having three.

Looks like Dunnam got his marching orders and they're clearing whitey from the top of the command staff. He was not only jumped by Dunnam for the interim Chief role, but now he is demoted by Dunnam. I'd retire and tell Broome to go frick herself.

So because you don’t want to “handcuff” the new chief, you demote someone and reduce their pay. Makes sense.

How bout the interim chief do their job as interim and properly evaluate the deputy chief.

Sounds like it was 100% a political demotion, and not based on performance.

Not sure how LA civil service works, but in MS he’d keep his same salary if demoted without cause.

David Hamilton was the one suggested by Dabadie to take his spot as interim until they found a permanent successor. Broome gave Dabadie the finger and pulled Dunnam up from spokesman to be chief. I'd imagine Hamilton is very much like Dabadie, and Dunnam will lick Broome's a-hole on command. He's being punished for not being a yesman.

He should retire if eligible to lock in the higher pay rate.

Agreed. I have no idea what duties a sergeant in BRPD has, but I'd imagine it's nowhere near as nice as Deputy Chief.

The police force isn't about merit; its the union and politics.

Exactly what does a deputy chief do anyway?

Three Deputy Chiefs means triple the catered lunch meetings for Broome. $100 says BRPD goes full ComStat driven like most of the “progressive” NE police departments under this new admin structure. The bureaucrats fricking love those numbers games.

This is what happens when you let the inmates run the asylum.

These people are the most predictable humans on Earth.

As soon as they get into power, everyone gets some sort of position and title.

I'll make a not so bold prediction: The Council on Aging will be begging for more funding by this time next year too.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought in civil service your retirement is based on your 3 highest years earnings?

They essentially chose not to renew his contract. I see no problem with him letting the new chief choose his deputy chief.

I'm no fan of SWB by any stretch, but this is a reasonable move.
