.308 vs .270. Which should I get?

I have a 7 mag and a 300 ultra mag but that is too much gun for down here IMO. I hunt just north of Waterproof and we do have some open terrain but only a few times have I had to make a shot 250 plus. Most of the shots I end up taking is between 20- 200yds. My dad and older brother love there .270s but my younger brother hunts only with his .308
Thoughts, opinions, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I hunt with a .308 and I love it. Sometimes it doesn't pass all the way through. I am considering getting a .300 wsm soon.

Either are great calibers. .270 will be a flatter shooting bullet at longer ranges. I shoot a .308, my hunting buddy shoots a .270. difference at the ranges you are talking would be negligible. Ammo is plentiful for both, local off the shelf options would probably depend on whats in favor in your area.

.308 it’s what the snipers used.
Both are perfectly fine for what you want to do. I suggest going with the .308 in a smaller lighter package.

Four Leaf, I’ll differ with you on too much gun with the 7 mag and the Ultra. Right now, I’ve got a 300 WBY pointed down a 600 yard lane. It’s for the trajectory, not killing power.
I’ve had extensive experience with both the .308 and .270. Since you already have long range rifles, you want the .308. It comes in a short action, allowing you to have a more compact, handy rifle for the short range hunting you described. Also, you can get a heavier bullet in the .308. I believe the .308 Win is the best all around Southern deer hunting caliber there is.

What you got against an ought six?

Either one. I like the .270 with 150gr bullets.

I don't think you can go wrong with either option.
Short action: .308
Long action: .270
Short action: .308
Long action: .270

Either is fantastically adequate with piles of deer killed at those ranges by each.
Past 300 you'll start to get noticeably more drop out of the .308, but inside 250 it'll be very negligible depending on the load.
If you've got a few long actions, go with the short action .308 as others have said, for a more compact easier handling gun.

That's like picking between two beautiful brunettes.

not much difference in ballistics between 308, 270 and 30-06 depending upon bullet choice. sighted in correctly would produce "hitting a pie plate" vertical accuracy out to 250-275 yards with no elevation change, hold dead on and pew...

270 will have less drop and higher velocity, but a lower BC.
Can’t go wrong with either, but I would personally go with the 270.......cause it’s awesome and I love it. That short action 308 do be nice though. Just get both.
ETA: at distances <300 yards that difference in BC isn’t going to be too important.

Either one will do fine. Get the 308. Its cheaper and plentiful.

You can’t lose with those two. I think the .270 is more popular but both are great deer guns. I shoot a ruger 30 06 but I have almost bought a tikka 270 a dozen times but can’t leave my baby until she misses

I got a Browning X bolt hunter in 308 that I love. Knocked one down a few weeks ago in S Texas at 210 yards. Lightweight, compact, and comes with an adjustable trigger.

Sorry, Four Leaf, but the OB doesn't have it's best game tonight. The thread was well into 3 pages long before it became a debate about the 6.5 CM; there was only one reference to the supremacy of the 243 Win (albeit tongue in cheek); no one has yet to mention the OB's all time best deer rifle/round, a Tikka in 7-08 Rem.
I grew up in the Pacific NW and devoured the monthly edition of "Outdoor Life" magazine; it's gun editor was Jack O'Conner, probably the biggest ever proponent of the 270 Win. Consequently, the first big game rifle I bought was a 270 Win. I later moved to LA where I was the only one in deer camp w/ a bolt action 270. Everyone else had lever action 30-30's, pump action 30-06 's or Remington semi-auto 30-06.'s OTOH, there was one other fellow w/ a bolt action, a Model 700 in 243 Win. My hunting buddy joked w/ me about my 270 and how it was a "varmint gun." Fast forward a few years and everyone now has bolt actions in 7-08, 308 or 30-06. Now my hunting buddy splits his hunting time between a 308 Win and a 270 Win.
When I bought my son his first big game rifle, I got a Savage bolt action in 308 Win. A few months ago I bought a bolt action in 7-08 to one day be a grand child's deer gun.
The 270 Win will shoot a little flatter, but will also recoil a little more. The 308 Win will have a short action, making it a little shorter and a little lighter. OTOH, I sure like the reassurance of a 30 caliber exit hole when I'm deer hunting, especially on an evening hunt. The choice is a toss up w/ no bad answer. For typical deer hunting in the south, I'd prob go w/ a 308.
