What's the appeal of a really expensive watch?
Either:
1. Status
2. Heirloom

I have a Fortis Classic Cosmonaut with the ceramic bezel. Purchased it recently for around $1900. Really nice watch imho.

$1500 - $2000 is a little tough IMO.
You can get an Omega Speedmaster in closer to the $3k range, so thats out along with most Seamasters (unless you're going quartz or 10+ years old).
Nomos is a good option, but thats going to be at the top end of your price range.
Ball is a good choice if you are looking to stay under $2k and buy new.
Another suggestion, if you are prepared to spend $2k, maybe tell your grandson and offer to go shopping with him. Deciding on a watch is a part of the joy of it, and if he wants to splurge, maybe add some cash on his end.
I can think of no better heirloom than a watch from my grandad to commerorate my passing the bar, that we bought together.

Should have waited. They filed for bankruptcy yesterday.

Tag, Omega, Breitling should all be in that range.
Tag is but Omega and Breitling don't have much if anything under $2K

Hamilton is another Swiss mechanical in the range.

Funny....
Not really, because they filed for bankruptcy yesterday. And I LOVE Fortis. One of my favorite watch companies ever. So this news is a bit disturbing for me.

Here is the discussion of it:
Fortis bankruptcy
I thought they filed for something else, meaning they don't have to pay back anyone for 6mos. That would give them a chance to right the ship before having to file bankruptcy

Nope, I've played around with one and it was awesome. I had a trade set up in Watchuseek that fell through at the last minute. Was gonna trade a Seiko Sumo, a Seiko Tuna, and an Oris TT1 and the guy got cold feet.
