How long does one have after canceling car insurance (due to not using the vehicle) to turn in license plate to the DMV before incurring fines? I've been in this situation for less than a week, now, but I don't want to have any fines. Thought I'd run it by the OT to get some frame of reference. That said, I'm going to turn it in tomorrow. Anything appreciated, thanks.

I sold a car and forgot to turn in the plate before I left the country for 6 months and ended up with close to an $800 dollar fine. So turn your shite in

24 hours.

They've probably already have a warrant out on you.

You're supposed to turn the plate in before cancelling the insurance.

My daughter waited a week before turning in the license plate and got hit with a big fine. I think it was almost 700 bucks.

24 hours. Your insurance agent must hate you or they would have told you this. You probably already got fined.

Assuming you're in LA you may be able to cancel the registration online and save yourself the DMV trip.

ETA I see this has been addressed.

My status is “pending cancelation” with geico so I guess it’s not officially canceled...

And people were telling me that they are just keeping licence plates free if charge.

what the? Louisiana sure is weird. Here in Arkansas you just throw a license plate away when you are done with it. I honestly can't see any valid reason LA would have for fining people over turning in unused license plates.

Agreed. Florida was the same way. I tried to give it to them and they said, "why, it's no longer valid"

I guess there are too many LA folks driving around with bad license plates. This state drives me crazy sometimes.

I've literally sold cars with license plates on them and just told the new owners "throw the plates away when you register the vehicle" never thought anything of it.

On the other hand, I DO wish Arkansas would bring back safety inspections. only do it right and actually get some of the junk of the roads.
