So to find out, we turned to review aggregator Metacritic. The site takes reviews from critics, normalises the scores on a scale of 1-100 (so if the critic scores out of 5, 4 stars becomes 80, 3 stars is 60 and so on - and if they use school-grading-style letters of the alphabet, the site has a way of approximating a score for those too).

We downloaded as much of the Metacritic movies database as we could - 9516 films at the time we scraped, with details over 190,000 reviews by at least named 842 critics. The thinking was that to get a review on Metacritic, a publication has to at least be somewhat decent. And that by focusing on critical reaction, this means that we avoid any "normal" user polling data, which is open to manipulation by coordinated voting and so on.

This also gave us a pool of films to analyse that was of reasonable size: It will definitely have every major release of recent years, and unlike using, say, IMDB’s database, it won’t mix in TV shows, student films, adverts and whatever other detritus IMDB lists alongside films. From glancing through the films we’re analysing, Metacritic’s pool of films is definitely biased towards the post-internet era for obvious reasons - though it does feature some older films (particularly bigger releases and films that people still care about today).

Obviously there could conceivably some issues - Metacritic’s database could have missing films or contain mistakes. Or maybe our data-scraping tool contains flaws (though we’re pretty confident in it). So by and large, we think this is a decent dataset.

And then to work out how controversial each was? We simply applied a common statistical test: Standard Deviation (SD), which provides a “score” of how diverse a given set of scores are. To be clear, this isn’t score about the quality of the film - it's a score showing how much critics agree or disagree. So if a film has reviews all over the place, it gets a high SD - and if critics tend to agree about a film, it will have a low score.

Now that's kind of interesting data to see.

I like seeing films like Hulk, Pain and Gain, To the Wonder, John Carter and Pacific Rim on the Divisive list.

Additionally, the anti-Gravity crowd will come in strong, ha. But it's equall interesting the MI3 is perhaps the most middling film ever made? I can live with that. Good stuff.

Also, yes, Spirited Away is the GOAT animated film.

If they graded this based on number of total pages on Tigerdroppings dedicated to each movie, then is there any debate that Batman v Superman would be number 1?

I have a hard time believing Inception is the 5th most divisive film ever, especially considering The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar are far more divisive. I don’t really hear too much of people debating Inception’s quality, while people have gone to town on both sides about Interstellar.

That's a great use of data mining, and I'm a big fan of critically divisive films. There's few things I like more than the Interesting Failure: a movie that swings big but falls on its face. I love ambition, even if it is failed ambition.

I wouldn't call this a list of my favorite films per se, but it is a list of films that are worth watching a fun to argue about. It's also worth noting why the film is divisive (SIN CITY: misogyny, THE COUNSELOR: general weirdness, UNDER THE SKIN: misandry, PASSION OF THE CHRIST: Mel Gibson).

Some will argue that THE NEON DEMON is one of the all-time great horror movies. I think its a slow-moving beautiful slog that gets trapped in it own symbolism so it can't tell a coherent story. But I get why people like it, and it does have Jenna Malone having sex with a corpse.

Still, a very cool list.

Melancholia is divisive with itself. First half is really bad, second half is pretty good. There's a stark contrast in quality between the two halves.

Naaaa. Some people think Inception is the greatest science fiction film ever made and is/was the second coming of 2001. Others think it's a high quality action film.

Both views have merits, but they are world's apart.

Additionally, remember these are probably views at release or close to it, many films will see an alteration of that reaction and settle into a more long term place in cinema after a few years.

See that very film, Inception. I don't think anyone would argue the first view much anymore. It's a great high-quality action movie with an interesting premise. It isn't a revolutionary science fiction film.

in re: to Inception

I don't see how "it was great" vs "no, it was just really good" is considered divisive.

I don't even remember any debate from critics, don't feel like looking it up but I'm guessing it's scored pretty high on rotten tomatoes, can't recall reading any negative reviews for Inception... I don't think I've ever gotten into a single argument with anyone of any movie knowledge on it, and I know people when I was in high school that hated Pulp Fiction.. isn't it also in the top 15 of imdb..

to this list I say, much ado about nothing ungrateful fool!

It isn't about "Great" vs. "Really good," it's about revolutionary and game changing science fiction film vs. slick action movie.

Here is LKisa Schwartzbaum:

quote:

Christopher Nolan’s audacious new creation demands further study to fully absorb the multiple, simultaneous stories Nolan finagles into one narrative experience. First time around, the movie — part sci-fi fantasy, part gun-toting heist pic, part mindfreak, all filmmaker brio — is dazzling and buzzy.

quote:

Gordon-Levitt wrangles sleeping dreamers into a configuration suitable for transport in a zero-gravity environment in a feat of cinematic choreography worthy of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

And AO Scott:

quote:

Admirers of Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” and Stanley Kubrick’s “2001” will find themselves in good company, though “Inception” does not come close to matching the impact of those durable cult objects. It trades in crafty puzzles rather than profound mysteries, and gestures in the direction of mighty philosophical questions that Mr. Nolan is finally too tactful, too timid or perhaps just too busy to engage.

quote:

So “Inception” is not necessarily the kind of experience you would take to your next shrink appointment. It is more like a diverting reverie than a primal nightmare, something to be mused over rather than analyzed, something you may forget as soon as it’s over.

quote:

That audiences do — and should — expect more is partly, I suspect, what has inspired some of the feverish early notices hailing “Inception” as a masterpiece, just as the desire for a certifiably great superhero movie led to the wild overrating of “The Dark Knight.” In both cases Mr. Nolan’s virtuosity as a conjurer of brilliant scenes and stunning set pieces, along with his ability to invest grandeur and novelty into conventional themes, have fostered the illusion that he is some kind of visionary.

now I had to look.. 86% on Rotten Tomatoes...

A.O. Scott gave it a positive review

Schwartzmann gave it a B+.. guess it'll have to study harder to get into UL Monroe school of Pharmacy

but you're trying to convince me why it's the fifth most divisive movie ever.
