Rhodesia once provided most of the grain for the continent of Africa and outside of a few drought years exported to other countries. It has become a importer exclusively now and the country's debt to gdp is out of control.
Rhodesia oddly enough was the only western country that was abandoned by both Britain in 1965 and then the United States during the Nixon adm via negotiations with Germany who supported the country at the time as well. Israel was the final supporter of Rhodesia in the end until the Marxist elected Mugabe government took over. Israel feared the influx of Marxists regimes impact on the region. They were proven correct.

Big Big fricking Mistake.

The entire continent of Africa has a GDP less than Texas.
It also has problems greater than 50% of the rest of the world combined.

China can have the whole place.

I'm speculating but my guess is a land grab. Zimbabwe has more unattended/poorly tended cultivated land than any country in the world. It's basically an ag hedge.

That's a decent theory

My concern is more general.

History has shown that the country with the biggest global presence (including strongest army, navy etc) is usually the defacto reserve currency.

The Greeks, romans, Byzantines,Dutch, French, British all had their turn over the course of history.

Zimbabwe, by itself, might not really matter. However, China taking over a lot more in Africa and the Asia pacific is a concerning development, IMO, if we want to maintain our economic, military and cultural dominance on a global level, and to keep one chef in the kitchen.

If anyone can bring stability and peace to Africa is the Chinese. The US & Europe lost its compass long ago by letting social welfare projects trump colonialism.

China is ruling Africa pretty much these days. They have invested assloads into the continent, because the government is pretty sure there will be a food crisis on their hands in the second half of the century.

China is going to be fine during this food crisis because they’ve been investing in this for over a decade, but they will rip everything from Africa once it occurs. The Africans may like this increase in infrastructure and jobs for now, but the Chinese are fully planning on betraying them and letting them starve.

Do you think they’re there to help the African people? frick no.

Think about the geopolitical environment that is China. They have 1.4 billion people that they have to feed that are finally no longer starving. They know about the quality of life of America, Europe, Japan, and South Korea. They like the cultures of those countries and are emulating them. They can not afford for their population to starve again or they will certainly rebel and form a Republic.

There is also global warming to contend with, which while China itself will be fine, all of their neighbors won’t be. Southeast Asia, India, and the Middle East will be totally fricked if even a mild case scenario occur, and these people will be trying to make their way to China. These starving people will see them as the first and best option. Not to mention North Korea continues to be a monkey on their back.

The best option is to secure the border (pretty easy given the Himalayas to the Southwest and the jungles to the Southeast) and then invest in assloads of land so their people don’t starve due to overpopulation. How do you do that? Buy tons of cheap land and labor. No where is better than Africa. Just secure them from warlords, and you’re good.

They aren’t investing in Africa, this is contingency plan so that their population doesn’t starve and countries like India and Bangladesh don’t beat them to the punch. They’re really fricking the Africans and all of the rest of Asia in the long run. It’s incredibly smart and visionary what the Chinese are doing with Africa. Worst case they start an American military industrial complex to secure their African stronghold that they bought legally and no one was ever the wiser until it was too late.

Their concern in this isn’t with us; it’s with their own people rebelling and their neighbors. Europe and America aren’t even registering with them here, aside from emulating them of course.

In the case of imperialism, it stretches countries and their wealth. Right now because of trump, hes gathering bread right now and cutting off the fat.

IMO, the US will allow the Chinese to spend their hearts out and when the time is right theyll be in a better position to attack.

We’re their #1 trading partner. So long as we keep up this relationship, America is the least of their concerns. They’re just wondering what sort of colorful inventions we’ll give them to secure Africa. Sure if they try some shite with Japan, but I think they’re smarter than that.

the real war going on right now is between japan and china for 2nd place for the world economy. All the US has to do is trade more with one over the other and they will always fight each other. two vendors and we are the customers

China will treat African nations like the army of Saron treated middle earth...they just want unregulated access to their national resources. This us why they give these huge loans for infrastructure projects that the poor nations can never pay off. When they default, the Chinese miners move in.

Is life imitating art? Maybe Whiterose (of Mr Robot) is behind the fall of Mugabe.

While China is indeed assuming the dominant position around the world, it’s not “old school.” They’re taking charge through investment and development not guns.

It has its downsides of course, as these third world governments answer to Beijing and less their own people.
