I don't think anyone expects someone to magically become upper middle class overnight, but there are some pretty basic steps to follow to keep from being poor. It's not really a complicated process.

The bigotry of low expectations is real and is what hurts poors and minorities the most. When you tell them that there's nothing wrong with their lifestyle or culture and anyone that says otherwise is a bigot, you're forcing them to be destined for failure.

I completely understand that, but in the end, it comes down to the individual or perhaps the community. There's no amount of resources anyone can give you that will make you successful if you don't make the effort to make good choices. And that's true across all racial demographics.

agreed. but until very recently, the "black community" has been targeted systematically by the US Government for failure time and time again since emancipation. At some point, people just say frick it and give up, because when even the law is a tool of injustice, nothing you could ever do matters.

My parents went to segregated schools till HS. That's barely two generations, and not even a lifetime ago. So many of the adults who are now having kids had grandparents and parents who said frick it and gave up. That ship is hard to turn, and you're right it takes personal responsibility and I believe that 100%. But without support from others and actually SEEING people succeed, kids aren't going to think about going to college, being an engineer, etc.

The "successful" people they see are the pimps, rappers, and pushers. Lots of these kids don't even realize they can make it in other ways, or if they do it's cause they are "selling out." When I was subbing last year, I can't tell you how many times I heard the smart kids getting ridiculed for trying to do well. That's the mentality that's passed on from generations of oppression and insecurity that people don't realize is killing their souls and address it as the poison it is. That needs to be squashed. There's a lot of sickness that is going to take a while to wash out of the black community. I'm trying my best to do my small part of it.

Well our 3 children have 2 parents that are still married ... I'm really trying to figure out how that makes them "privileged". I truly don't get it.

I get that some have options and opportunities more than others ... I get that we need to be sensitive to that. But how is having two parents still married a "privilege?

Maybe their parents should have worked harder to stay together ...

Black immigrants to this country are surpassing their American counterparts. That's a sign of a cultural problem, not a skin color problem.

And that's something that no amount of money or white guilt can cure. The change has to come from within and that has to start with an honest assessment within the "black community". Even black people that try to make a real assessment are maligned and labeled as race traitors. Sorry, but blacks self police to the point where they are their biggest hindrance. Blacks now have every advantage to get ahead if they choose to do so.
