10 years ago, most online degrees were a joke. My son is attending his first semester at LSU in August. 2 of his 5 classes are online and he's in the honors college.

I graduated last May from Northwestern in Natchitoches, and I'm working on my MBA from ULL, all online.

Since most brick and mortar schools have at least some classes online, I think the general perception is favorable.

Here is the heart of the issue: education is not a protected class. For hiring managers, the easiest way to parse out the 'ya's' from the 'nay's' is to toss the online degrees. When you have from 200 to 1,000 applicants, you can see the need to eliminate the pile for a criterion rapidly.

Other than a handful of well known online only schools, there would be no way to tell who has a online degree from a resume or application. My some has a totally online masters degree from Purdue, there is no distinction on his degree or transcript that the course work was earned online.

This doesn’t make sense.

Pretty much everyone who does an online degree aren’t agoraphobics hiding in momma’s basement.

They are people who are working full time, dealing with people and gaining experience, while juggling the demands of school with their job responsibilities.

You are forgetting working in one location at the same time you get awarded a degree at another. People can connect the dots by looking at the times on the resume.

I’m finishing up my online MBA from a respected brick and mortar program. I work with the c-suite in a Fortune 100 company with a bunch of highly educated former consultants with big time MBAs and it is not looked down upon in 2018.

We take the same classes as the brick and mortar students at the same time they do with the same schedule. They have cameras in all of the classrooms and I just watch the recordings at night after work. We have group projects with the brick and mortar students and office time with the professors to call and discuss the material. We have to physically go on campus several times a year as well.

My degree won’t say online on it either.

What? Diploma? My undergrad diploma doesn't even say my major.

There are some that aren’t just “MBA”. They have an O or E in it.

I don’t care what is on my diploma.

ETA:

Your diploma doesn’t have your major on it? Feel like that’s weird. But yeah, I could’ve been more clear. Typing on my phone in bed right now

I work with plenty people who have “real” degrees, and they are the stupidest people I have ever met. A degree means little. Congrats. You’re book smart. That doesn’t mean shite when it’s time to grind it out everyday. I respect people who can get shite done. Adapt and overcome, mother fricker.

I guess after thinking about it mine might not either. I haven’t taken it out the attic since I got it a decade ago

Can’t decide what I’ll do with my MBA. It might make it to my home office behind a house plant

I hardly ever know where someone got a degree, if one was obtained at all.

Can't exactly get a Master's in Electrical Engineering online...

However, a lot of Comp Sci degrees are online and get you in the same room in some industries.

Sometimes wish I double majored.
