SWB: Envision a Baton Rouge where everyone takes the bus

Mayor Broome to transit leaders: Envision a Baton Rouge where everyone takes the bus
LINK
For Baton Rouge to reach its full potential, its transit agency needs to be seen as a viable option for all residents — whether they need to take the bus or simply choose to ride instead of using their own vehicle, East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome said Tuesday.
The mayor-president had visited the Capital Area Transit System less than a week after the parish Metro Council refused to put her Better Transportation and Roads tax proposal on the November ballot.
Unfortunately the bus system in Baton Rouge is run by a corrupt organization that makes no effort to provide decent service. LSU even fired CATS for poor performance less than a decade ago, opting for another service provider to handle the LSU area's needs.
SWB is lobbying for more taxpayer cash to be funneled into their slush fund.

Just how much of that can be accomplished in the next few years remains to be seen. The CATS 10.6-mill property tax goes up for renewal in 2022. Broome said that if the agency can provide service to more riders of choice, it may be able to win more votes.
The CATS board and other community leaders have liked the direction Deville has taken in his first year. On the eve of his anniversary at the helm, the board granted him a 5 percent raise, bringing his annual salary to $157,500.
It's worth noting that SWB refused to seek federal funds to establish a street car line between downtown and LSU because it didn't help north Baton Rouge. She turned down federal funding because it didn't directly impact enough black people in her mind.

Prepare for a massive tax increase to cover all the buses for "potential" riders.

When I was living off of Burbank, I looked into taking the bus into downtown for work - 8 miles away. It was going to take 3 busses to get there.
Yeah, envision taking the bus my arse.

Unless Dudley and Dubossier want to pay for the expansion, she can go frick herself.

How many CEOs has CATS gone through in the past 10 years?

CATS made a lot of promises before the tax election. They won the election, but have they delivered.
Are they running on time, is the GPS tracking system doing well, is ridership up, and are the buses clean and attractive?
Is anybody watching CATS or is this just like the deal with the COA?

That's racist.

I know she’s dumb, but there isn’t one person with a brain in her administration she could run these ideas to before getting them out in the press?
Posted on 9/20/17 at 8:06 am to member12
Maybe SWB should set the example and have her and her staff start riding the bus first.

"The bus system in Baton Rouge is a disaster!"
"How about a plan to make it better?"
"Hell no!"

The closest bus stop to my house is about a 2.5 mile walk. That would be lovely on a nice August morning in a long sleeve button up and slacks

Give her another term and she'll get us there

It seems unwise to stand around anywhere in Baton Rouge these days, let alone at a bus stop. I don't want to get shot.

I'm not sold that the LSU-Downtown tram would be cost effective in the long run, but I'd have to imagine it would be better than anything linking from NBR.

Is the bus going to come pick me up at my house whenever I want? No? Then frick that.

It will spread crime to every part of the community.

I'd rather first envision a Baton Rouge where people aren't getting shot in once-safe (as in not that long ago) neighborhoods.
