Thanks, was just curious. She said she lives 9 miles from the beach and her home is built for hurricanes (concrete reinforced walls and hurricane windows).
I don't know anyone who lived 9 miles from the beach that got water in MS, unless it came from somewhere else.
Wind is always wind, I don't know if you can adequately prepare for how your roof/house is going to handle that. Just take the window precautions, put the car against he garage door, etc.

Hope everyone gets a decent priced seat. Glad delta and others capped prices.

The majority of non-mobile homes in southern Florida are built for hurricanes, but I don't believe people can fully grasp how miserable one or two weeks without power can be. I evacuate during hurricanes because I don't want to deal with it more so than for safety reasons.

This is me 1,000%. I would have left 2 days ago just not to deal with BS.
Telling my friend's sister/husband to leave if they can after it passes because it is going to suck.
I did one day in NO after Isaac, and said, "WTF am I doing, I can just go to my dad's in Mississippi and have all the amenities"

Hunkered down in Port St Lucie here. During the first hurricane of 04 we lost power for 18 days. 3 days after being restored the second hit and we lost it for another6 days.
I thought that was the worst time of my life until the next year when my house burnt to ground during Wilma. Needless to say I'm pretty stressed right now.

Don't really blame them. I don't think meteorologists get into it because of late summer light showers

Dumb question incoming:
Is the warm water in the swamps of the everglades enough to prevent a hurricane from weakening fast? Or does it really need deep open water?

Seems like Irma has a vendetta against the entire peninsula.
How do you evac an entire state?

Cosmo- open and deep warm water is best. My understanding is warm water is great... deep warm water is better... but something that shallow won't be a source of strength.

From our property to the the east coast is about 49 miles. I'm crossing my fingers for the 1975-ish double wide that sits on the property surrounded by trees. 14 hours away, there's not much else to do.
How bad is it looking in that area? Last I saw was wind gusts up to 60 but that yesterday before the latest westward shifts.
