Dumb question incoming: Is the warm water in the swamps of the everglades enough to prevent a hurricane from weakening fast? Or does it really need deep open water?

There's something called a brown ocean effect, where a storm can draw energy from land if it's highly saturated. Harvey was slow in weakening for this reason.

Irony is I was a firefighter on duty and nobody could get to the house because of the winds. Recently retired and this is my first storm I'm not surrounded by fire trucks and medics lol.

Non meteorologist response- I think a couple of Hurricanes have crossed the everglades/Florida/Okeechobee without weakening (Charley?).

Seems like Irma has a vendetta against the entire peninsula.

Yeah, the wife already has her ticket to fly into Daytona Beach on the 20th for a little r&r. I guess that's blown all to hell.

My brother lives in Okeechobee, and they don't have anyplace to go, and he's disabled. Ugh, I hope the path changes to the coast and not straight up the middle of the state.

Wow. My property in Florida is no more than 15 miles away from yours. Didn't think another human outside of the 50 square mile radius would know where interlachen is

Slackster, looks like Irma took some dry air in the northern facet in this last frame.

It's not mandatory (yet) for all of Collier County. Just for Goodland and Everglades City.

This is getting scarier by the hour. Prayers for everyone.

Switzerland, duh!

I hope all of you and your property are safe down there. But the people first. Don't do something stupid and stay to save possessions. That's all they are.

No worries, I live in SW Louisiana...it's just old family property that sits vacant except for the 2 weeks I go every year to do upkeep to stop it from falling down. The insurance would be a blessing and the lake property would be worth more without that old rundown house on it.

Dumb thought, but what is the chance that Trump sends a carrier group to South Florida to help with emergency response and help.

I can't think of a better way to sustain and get services/goods to people quicker.

I saw a pic on her fb of her home...she has some sort of body of water (swamp, whatever) in her backyard(doesn't even look that far from her back patio). Even mentioned finding an alligator on fb once. I hope her home doesn't flood.

It's at times enough to limit rapid weakening but not near enough to sustain a major hurricane. It needs those deep ocean waters to fuel that.

This is mind boggling.
