If it really happened as described then, yes drop the charges and give the son a medal. Also, if the boyfriend had 26 prior arrests and if he was the problem in all of the other police visits for domestic disputes then this was never going to end well for him. You reap what you sow.

People need to understand that sometimes charges and prosecution are undertaken as a deterrent for future crimes. I highly doubt the prosecutor even wants to convict this guy, but if they do what many in this thread seem to want, not charge and give the guy a medal, then it's kind of open season on abusers, isn't it?
That's okay in one sense, as many abusers should have their heads caved in, but the law proscribes that police do the caving in, if that needs to happen. Giving the kid a medal and the key to the city is a recipe for having a lot of murders that aren't justified like this one seems to be.

As it should be if said abuser is caught in the act. If I catch you choking someone I care about, your life is forfeit to me.

A friend of mine's mother was routinely beat by his father as he grew up. Guy was a drunk POS. Mother stayed with him for the son.
Son turns 14. His dad beat the shite out of his mom that night. When he was in the shower, his son grabbed a wooden bat, walked up to the curtain, and beat him until he couldn't move. Then he kept beating him.
The dad was in the hospital for a few weeks. Local DA and sheriff's dept refused to do anything to the kid.
He has never drank another drop and dotes on his wife now.
When I was younger and more blunt, I asked him why he didn't kill him? He said he swung the bat until he couldn't swing anymore. Then started punching until the cops pulled him off.
Kid was maybe 135lbs at the time.
Some people need to be reminded anyone can kick their arse if they choose the time wisely.
