Was the cop who strangled Eric Garner charged?
As wrong and tyrannical, and unjust as it is, there is a different standard for law enforcement, many politicians, the wealthy, and the powerful. This however does not include law enforcement, in the process of protecting themselves and others, in the execution of their duties.

I wonder if this became like a typical Walmart deal where the mom started beating on the kid for saving her

I'm certainly no lawyer, but I believe you have the right to defend another person's life.

Unfortunate that he lives in New York. I feel most southern states he would not have been charged.
According to the article only the police have "charged" him. They aren't the ones who decide who gets charged. The article misuses the word "charged". Police only arrest or cite people and turn it over to the prosecutor to determine whether to pursue charges. Often in a case like this, prosecutor will either decline to charge him or present it to a grand jury who will decline to indict. The same process would likely occur in practically any state.

Oh, my bad.
I read this as the choke happened after the fact.

He reacted to his mother being attacked. What would you have done? Drop the charges.

Even if it did, how would you react if you found out someone was beating your mom?

Well, I'd be mad...and if I killed them out of rage, it'd be killing someone...

Somehow we have gotten away from placing blame on the criminal. Without his actions there is no story.
And isn't each case different? Just because this boy killed a guy that was beating the everloving shite out of his mom does not mean "ERMAGERD!!!! There's vigilante's everywhere."
Them sending this boy home with a medal does not allow gunfights in the street at high noon.
