Just looked out of curiosity on the app I use.

Have fun at Motel 6. Only $172/night.

nothing is guaranteed with them, nothing. You're SOOL.

I've been renting out some family places on Airbnb for two years and I've never canceled a reservation for anyone. I've never had a reservation cancelled when I've rented either.

That's just a shitty thing to do at the last minute. It's no indicative of Airbnb so much as it is of that particular host.

Teach you not to use a shite yuppie service like airbnb again

AirBnb is awesome.

Yes there are instances like the OP, but AirBnb puts a lot of effort to deter those. The hosts are reprimanded handsomely when they cancel close to the booking date. So much so that it's not in their best interest to do so. AirBnb doesn't allow them to book another person in that slot either, so usually people who do this have extenuating circumstances.

Always slip the front desk agent $20-100 at check in and most of the time (especially if they are younger) they will put you in an upgraded room or give you some free stuff.

Have you contacted airbnb yet?

I would fricking roast the property owner on that site and every travel site I could find.

Airbnb or vrbo I would think would try to make this right.

When I worked at a hotel in New Orleans, you wouldn't believe how many times we overbooked and had to call around to all of the other hotels in the area to see if they had vacancies. None of them ever did and they were overbooked as well. Ended up getting my arse chewed out many times by guests (rightfully so, I didn't overbook them) before we booked them a room at the airport hotels. Sucks but every hotel does this.

It's happened to me too, once out of the many times I've used it.

Again, they put in deterrents so the hosts will not, but it's not going to be perfect. But it's also up to the renter to do their diligence and book a place with good reviews and not many cancellations. Cancellations are automatically put in their reviews.

And as the poster below you noted, this can happen at hotels too.

Love when people are in dire need, have internet access, and decide that the O-T is their first best option for help.

Trying to be cheap and get an airbnb? You rolled the dice and lost. I bet it was some $35/night room.
