Headed to New York Thursday and need some new places to go. Have been to most of the famous places, both low and high dollar. Any locals who can steer me to hidden gems?

I just got back and had some great meals but I made reservations way in advance. I doubt you'll get in unless there's a cancellation:
Le Bernardine lunch - profound
Little Owl dinner- tiny one room place in west village. Superb
Estella lunch - very good on edge of SOHO. Great chef
Le Coucou - dinner- Hottest place in NYC right now. Spectacular!!!
Maolino -Sunday brunch- Good but I was burned out by then. Would skip.

Came here to post this. Went a few months back for my birthday and it was arguably the best meal of my life. Cannot recommend it highly enough.
Gramercy Tavern is outstanding as well

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I have been to some of these but there are a number of them I was unaware of. Thanks again.

If you venture towards Tribeca, Batard and Ichimura are both excellent.

Ichimura
I went to Ichimura in December 2015 based on your recommendation on this site. It was, without question, one of the best sushi experiences I have ever had. Tried to go back in December 2016 but found out, chef Eiji Ichimura had left.
Ichimura leaving Brushstroke
We decided to try the kaiseki at Brushstroke but I was pretty disappointed.
Do you know if the new Ichimura is as good as it was at the previous location?

New Ichimura
Yeah, I meant the new place (Ichimura) in this thread. I personally have not visited , but a friend there whose opinion I trust says it is well worth the $300/person. He said Ichimura is just as good as he was at Brushstroke. Incredible food is the focus and chef interacts with the diners explaining everything. Getting guaranteed to sit with the head chef results int he premium price.
Sushi Nakazawa has a Jiro disciple and is very good too. Sushi Katsuei is a great modest priced option. Shuko is from former Masa chefs and is supposed to be good with a more modern flare.

If you don't care how much it costs, my two favorites are Eleven Madison Park and Jean Georges. For casual dining I like the real N.Y. pizza places such as John's, Lombardi's and the original Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge. I also like Balthazar which makes me feel as though I have been transported to Paris. These may not be hidden gems, but they are some of my favorites.

Victor's - dinner spot. great cuban food. Best mojito I've ever had. Ox tail was delicious
Beauty & Essex - front of restaurant is a pawn shop (upscale one, and it's just for show, this is a 5 star restaurant) you walk through a secret door then through a dance club and past that is an amazing dinner. Great atmosphere, drinks, and food. Probably my favorite meal in NYC
