tGOAT quote on religion by Rust Cole:
If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward then, brother, that person is a piece of shite. And I’d like to get as many of them out in the open as possible. You gotta get together and tell yourself stories that violate every law of the universe just to get through the goddamn day? What’s that say about your reality?

Aww. Did I piss off another small minded, Christian, frickwit? Stick your Bible up your arse and shite it out. Then use it for fertilizer. It would be far more useful in that form.

It's a film based in France with a cast nearly entirely made up of British and American actors and involves a man turned into a beast by a magical spell that can only be broken if he convinces Emma Watson to kiss him.

They had beast-men and talking candlesticks in 1740? I so need a fricking time machine. Betcha that was some trippy shite.

I'm actually surprised that no one else is talking about the black characters in the movie. Yeah, I know it's a fantasy film, but it is a fantasy film based in history. And when you look at the history, the casting of black actors in main roles amounts to nothing but stunt casting.
Beauty and the Beast is set in the year 1740. Yet slavery is not abolished in France until 1794. Despite this, we have three very prominent black characters who would not have been able to climb as high as they did on the social ladder.
- Pere Robert, Catholic priest. The first black Catholic priest was not ordained until 1854.
- Madam Garderobe, the maestro's wife. Interracial marriages/relationships were not legalized in France until 1792. There's no way this marriage could have survived so openly in French court.
- Plumette, Lumiere's love interest. See above.
I can't tell if this is serious or a joke?

While I applaud the research, it's faulty. There were plenty of (non-slave) Moors throughout that region of Europe (including some varieties of Saracens who weren't strictly Arab) and black priests have been around since the very early Church. St. Augustine of Hippo, for instance, one of the most famous Catholic saints, was almost certainly dark-skinned enough that he'd be considered black by most modern American standards. A considerable number of early Church leaders came from Africa, some Saharan, some sub-Saharan.
I haven't seen the movie, but what you describe does invite some legitimate criticism. Black people weren't likely to have a high social status even when they weren't slaves, that much is true. But I'm a medievalist and feel that most people don't realize just how diverse and heterogeneous medieval and Renaissance Europe really was. For a millennia after the fall of Rome, Europe was still feeling the effects of Roman hegemony and the attendant interaction of cultures.

Claude Frollo is really a landmark character in pointing out their hypocrisy. Being pious and being horrible to others who are different from you only make you worse and dangerous that you think you have a murderous God on your side.
The only folks being horrible to anyone in this thread aren't the ones who screen films that don't hold a Christian worldview.

The list of ignorant bullshite rules in the work of mythology called the Bible goes on and on and on.
Aha. Another Christianity "expert" on the Internet who doesn't really know anything.

The vast majority of Christians know little to nothing about their own religion other than what their pastor decides he wants to spout off about it, even though blindly following false prophets is also forbidden in the Bible.
The vast majority of everyone knows little to nothing about anything they believe other than what they read on the Internet. Based on your first quote, I know that you are one of those.

Religion has been duping fools for thousands of years and I'm sure it will continue to do so for thousands more.
Your beliefs certainly have you duped. That much is obvious.

He also has a problem with people saying "curse words" even though there is nothing in the Bible that says anything about "thou shalt not use the words shite, damn, arse, or frick".
This has more to do with teaching my children not to be trashy than it does with anything in the Bible. The Bible does teach against using profane language, but you are correct there is no list of terms. I have no problem with my children seeing these in films, though. They are aware that we don't use these terms because we aren't trashy people, and that it has nothing to do with our religious beliefs but more to do with behavior that society rejects. There are much better ways to get your point across. Cussing is for the lazy and the uneducated.
ETA: This is far different from not exposing them to activities that society is pushing for everyone to accept. I would like to hope people can see the difference, but there are apparently quite a few people in this thread who can not. /ETA

This is how children act when they don't have a real argument.

I have always found that the angry ones are the ones who know they are rejecting truth, but still choose to reject it because they don't want to admit they are wrong. They usually grow out of that.
ETA: Based on his posts, it's amazing that he feels confident enough to call anyone else "small-minded."

do you let your 9 year old watch Pirates of the Caribbean in which Jack regularly makes "under the radar" sex/booze jokes and references to hookers? Just trying to see where your line is.
Depends on the movie. Like I said with this film, if it has raised a red flag due to certain content I will either watch it first or we will watch it together at home when it comes out on DVD.
You are also describing behaviors that are not under a push to be considered normal by everyone. Literally no one says drinking excessively is a good behavior that should be considered normal in society and accepted. Prostitution is also abhorred by society.
Surely you can see the difference between these things and the current way gay activities are being pushed. The different reactions to these activities by society at large call for different reactions from me when deciding what to expose my children to.
It's amazing to me how many folks on this board think parenting decisions such as what media your children are consuming (this is a huge decision) can be summed up in one-size-fits-all statements.

For the sake of historical accuracy (since that is what we are apparently going for in a thread about Beauty and the Beast), then I feel obliged to inform you that the correct term is "Moops", not "Moors".

How the hell is Beauty and the Beast such a controversial movie? All because we are old enough to know when a person is behaving in a manner that would be gay?
If people want to have a discussion about religion and lifestyle choices, take it to the OT.

Without resorting to personal opinion and other subjective standards, please explain how you define "decent". This is the ultimate folly of atheism. As Dostoevsky famously pointed out, if there is no God then everything is permissible. After all, if right and wrong become a matter of personal and social opinions, nothing is ever objectively wrong.
