If that's your goal, then bowhunting probably isn't for you. I've spent the entire season hunting with a recurve and have yet to draw back on a deer.

I'm in the same boat as you. I can see where some of these adrenaline junkies want to hear a deer breathe before they sling a broadhead through his lungs, but it's not for me.

I hunt to relax and fill my freezers. I like going camping with my son, drinking beer, sitting in an office chair in a heated boxstand, and filling my freezers. Some people hunt for sport, I hunt for meat and fun. My little family eats venison 3-4 days a week and I have recently gotten into making jerky(which takes a lot of meat). So I don't think I could supply enough meat bow hunting.

To each his own, that's what's so great about hunting. Do it any way you choose.

Getting a deer within bow range is so much more of a challenge than sitting in a box stand over a food plot.

I'm by no means a successful bow hunter but this is what it's about for me. It's all about becoming a better hunter and being able to predict where a deer is going to be within 30 yards. I can buy ribeye for what I spend to get a couple dozen lbs of deer meat. To me, there's nothing more rewarding than reading the sign, taking all the steps necessary to not get busted, having your stand in just the right spot, being honed in on your craft enough to draw without being detected and make an accurate shot. It's the ultimate confirmation of your skills as a hunter to be able to take a deer in bow range. To do it is to get inside the deer's head and understand it, and that's what really makes hunting in general interesting to me.

I only really started bow hunting about 6 years ago. I got my first decent buck with one this year. It's a lot harder but a lot more rewarding. Even if you're a meat hunter, it gives you more time to hunt than if you're restricted to just a rifle.

Don't forget about that sound an arrow makes on contact.

Some like to shoot, some like to hunt.

I hunt with a sightless take-down recurve bow that I built myself. Very challenging, very fulfilling.

Not against gun hunting big game at all, just doesn't do much for me anymore. But if all I wanted/needed to do was put meat on the table, I'd probably do it with a gun.

I can easily fill my freezer with my bow ever year if I'd like. I shoot at least 2 does every bow season then focus on bucks.

If I wanted I could strictly bow hunt and tag out (if I wasn't particular about which bucks I shoot)

I like the challenge and getting to see more deer for longer periods of time for longer at a time

The mental aspect of it. You have to scout, plan, conceal, etc.

Plus I rather shoot my bow than my rifle anyways

I started bow hunting about 8-9 years ago and didn't take a shot the first couple years. After I let that first arrow go and killed a doe, I couldn't stop shaking. Since then, the only time I pick up a deer rifle is when it's raining it's arse off and I don't have a choice. I get more satisfaction out of killing a doe with my bow than a buck with a rifle. There's just something about having deer so close that you are worried they can hear you breathing, waiting for every deer around to simultaneously look the right direction, being confident in your distance and angles, trying to ignore that MFing mosquito on your face and quietly drawing back...then there's the thwack of that broadhead hitting the perfect spot. It all makes me giddy as all hell.

This board gave me counsel on getting into bow hunting - I may never pick up a rifle again.

I love getting a deer 15 or 20 yards in and they have no idea you are there.

It is so addictive - and I have become a better hunter than I was before bow hunting.

My girlfriend bought me an 18" block for Christmas. It's done. My arrows pass straight thru.
My sons got me a 3d pig from academy. 1 week, done. I shoot about 80 arrows/day

How does it handle broadheads?
The pro at my local bow shop says he has one that'll probably get menough a years worth of use.

I believe you, but that's ridiculous. You shooting broadheads?

I've got one that's been shot at least a few thousand times and it is still fine. Paint wire off.

I have shot broadheads several times, trying different ones I've bought including some fixed blades. I know that's partially responsible. But I just shoot a lot. That block has basically become a backstop for shots at the pig. If it passes thru the pig, the block stops it.
