My wife feels the same way, as long as she eats she's fine. I like to try new stuff and dress up every now and again.

Pretentious is the single most overused word on this board. What is pretension to one is simply regular behavior to another. It's fine to prefer comfy sweats and causal settings; spend your money when and how you like. But realize that many spend a great portion of their lives in coat and tie, don't find such dress strange or uncomfortable, and are happy to enjoy a lovely meal with attentive service. We all get to choose in our great country.

I'm also thinking of the French and Italians, who take great pride in both their dress and their dining....yes, you find casually dressed people in both countries, but rarely do you find the level of slobbery/unkempt appearance one finds in the average US fast food joint. I'd rather look at a room full of Italian men who understand bella figura than a pack of cargo-shorted, logo golf shirt wearing Americans. And don't get me started about pajama bottoms in public....

If your coat is something you dread putting on because it's uncomfortable, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe buy a better coat.

I haven't been to Commanders in years but you aren't getting a comparable meal at a place that's $10 per entree.

This may be a big part of why you are uncomfortable in such places, When I was young, I felt awkward when other people were "serving" me, whether it be a waiter, shoeshine guy, or housekeeper. I felt like, dude, I'm just a peon like you, so you don't have to kiss my arse and call me sir.

I got over it eventually, with one exception: bathroom attendant. I feel sorry for the poor bastards and embarrassed to have them handing me a towel.

Your opinions are strange on this subject.

Your overly-continued use of the word, "aloof", is downright uncalled for. Stop using it and mix things up a bit.

Yes, substance over style in my world. For example, Wolfgang Puck is the most uppity, overpriced crap I've ever paid for.

Bad atmosphere. Loud.

Give me quiet and traditional. USDA Prime Beef. Wagyu, or I even know a place that has Kobe that is upscale, but not fancy in the way you or I describe.

There's nothing at all "aloof" about Galatoires.

Put on a jacket sometimes, you freaking cretins, and at least pretend some part of civilized society still exists. It's not going to kill you.

I don't care for fancy very often either. There's restaurants where you eat foam that has the "essence" of whatever it is you're supposed to be eating. That's some pinky out shot of I've ever seen it

Kobe is about $20 per oz. So no, I'm not paying $500. I usually get a 6 oz.

It's upscale, but not in a fancy, uppity way as I describe it.

Back to point, $20 per oz for certified Kobe is a bit pricey. Should be able to purchase an authenticated Kobe for much less.

You keep using the word, "aloof." I'm assuming you're trying to say fancy schmancy restaurants are uninviting or cold when, in fact, these places are doing everything they can so that you enjoy your experience.

In the example you gave, galatoires is simply trying to maintain a throwback atmosphere to a time when people cared about their appearance. They serve old school dishes and do them very well, that's what they do. IMO, if they didn't sort of make you feel like you stepped back in time, people would complain that time had passed their food by and it would probably close. I, for one, enjoy the experience for what it is, a part of old New Orleans that I don't necessarily want to go back to but don't mind visiting for a little while every time I go to galatoires...

Internet legend. It exists when the restaurant brings you the certificate showing it's authentic from from Japan.

Inpost restrictions have been lifted. Difficult to get, which is why I was stunned to find it in Moline, but it was genuine Kobe.
