The existing laws are the result of women gaining power in society and seeing early marriages as a form of slavery for young women. Early marriage + no divorce meant feminists wanted to delay marriage.
Now that there is no danger of an enlightened woman being trapped in a marriage, what's sustaining these age of consent laws?
You see the chatter here any time a teacher gets in trouble for banging a high school dude. Who would fight against a lowering of the age of consent? A bunch of people that will be dead in a generation.
In a world where a 12 year old can elect a sex change, how can we possibly justify historically anomalous laws about when they can express themselves freely in a sexual way?

people have different families and that leads to a lot of different situations.

Just because someone said it doesn't mean its true; if I saw data to back it up then I would speak as if its a fact, but it is an industry in which it allows pedophiles to easily target their victims. Just like becoming a priest. I am not saying all priest are pedophiles and I am not saying all priest who are caught in the act decided to become a priest specifically for this reason, but because of the access priest have, that could be the sole reason some people decide to become priest (I am not trying to take a shot at priest, if this is the case then it would be a very small percentage, but my point is that humans find access to what they are sexually attracted to).

Personally, I don't believe a 12 year old understands the implications of "choosing" a sex different than the one they were born with any more than they can make consensual decisions regarding sex with older people, be it male or female. Just because a child is biologically able to reproduce doesn't mean they are mentally ready to do so. The same people pushing the "every kid gets a trophy" meme cannot turn around and say a child is able to give consent based solely on biology. If you're going to press for that, we better start giving kids a HELL of a lot more responsibility.

One interesting thing about that, is that the victim sued him many years later for ruining her life. He gave her about a million dollars to settle, and now she says it was no big deal, he shouldn't be facing sentencing anymore.
