This is good advice. Idk if it's like this with your friend, but often when people cant sleep, its because they have sleep anxiety and are trying to hard to fall asleep. Tell your friend lay in bed and to try and stay awake. A little reverse psychology can do the trick sometimes.

Alcohol is terrible for sleep LINK

I currently take young living sleepessence and it's more effective than anything else I've tried. Though it's not cheap. It contains melatonin, but plain melatonin doesn't help me at all

Read a book for at least 30 minutes. Set your AC on 65-68. Also, don't check the time and worry about what time it is. Just tell yourself that you have plenty of time to catch some sleep.

Gwen Stefani said it best "I'm just sipping on chamomile". Try that stuff. It works.

Glass of red wine (or 2) between supper and bedtime. Then read til you fall asleep. Works like a charm.

Amitriptyline 10 mg. Does not make you crazy but puts you in a deep sleep, no grogginess next morning. Been taking it for 15 years. Life saver.

Have your sleeping room cold. No higher than 68
Make the bedroom pitch black. Cover up everything letting light in
Do not look at your phone for last hour before bed
No tv in bedroom
Keep regular sleep schedule
When you get up get plenty of light. Keep your days bright and sleeptime dark.
Meditate with deep abdominal breathing

Read r/space or r/technology. Not because the articles are boring, but because the ideas are so dense it'll tire your brain.

It's pretty obvious, but limit caffeine if you drink it past lunch.

If you take melatonin, don't do it for more than a couple days. I took some to sleep and after like a week I slept horribly. When I finished the bottle. I forgot to buy more and after a day or two of not taking it I slept like a baby again and didn't wake up 5 times in the night

These for sure. Blue light (i.e. anything artificial phone, tv, kindle) is bad for you when trying to go to sleep. I've found reading some kind of non-fiction book for 15-30 minutes does wonders.

Also, exercise most days and sleeping will come easier as well.

Workout in the mornings.
After supper, have a glass of red wine. Read a little bit.

Darkass room. Fan on high.

Count down from 1000.

Alternate weeks of melatonin, valerian and a warm water magnesium drink.
