I know that video of Cam failing to jump on the ball sure looks bad. And, frankly, it's damned hard to defend.

But, it's also just exceedingly odd. I mean, that dude takes A LOT of shots. One can dislike him, but nothing up to now has ever indicated Cam is afraid of contact.

Is it possible that he saw blue out of the corner of his eye diving towards the ball and in an instant, thought HIS guy was already getting the ball?

I mean, I'm not a Carolina fan and Cam can be a douche and a half, but, this is just one of those things where the "appearance" seems so out of whack that you have to wonder if the appearance is correct.

I think he figured the ball was going to pop out and he wanted to be able to make a play on it. Still, it looked bad.

I thought it was pretty obvious he expected the ball to squirt out (which it did) and hence was hesitant to move for it?

he thought Demarcus Ware was going to recover it cleanly so he didnt dive. But still, it was Ware's arm vs 6'5" 250 Cam. You have to go wrestle for the ball in that situation

Very possible.

That's what I mean though. For as awful as looked and for as much as it may have APPEARED he just chickened out, that explanation just doesn't seem to pass the smell test to me.

It could be any of the above things, or it could be that he has no heart.

what? the ball was laying there for him to fall on it.

and as for the OP, he confused the white jerseys for black?

As angry as I was when I saw him do that I keep coming back to this thought.

With all of the hits I've seen him take I just don't believe that him not falling on the ball was because he was scared. I think it was a just a major mental error that will haunt him for years. Anyone that says it was because he's afraid of contact has never seen him play a game.

What went through his mind we'll likely never know.

He flinched. It's that simple.

And, while that is worthy of a lot of criticism in that situation...it's not even close to the biggest problem Newton had last night.

His inability to control his emotions cost his team the game. He pouted the entire night. His energy level was non-existent because of it. The guy has an emotional age of about 7. He has zero ability to handle adversity. That video is getting tons of play, but the video of him on the sideline throwing himself down on his back rolling around is literally embarrassing. The way he acted when he was begging for a call in the end zone was also pathetic. You could see him trying to regain his composure. He just couldn't.

Cam was getting crushed. He stayed in the pocket taking hits. Did those hits accumulate and make him chicken out? Possibly. Still, the whole "Cam is afraid of contact" is a bit of an overstatement considering he is that offense's goalline offense.

I don't think any honest sports fan thinks he "chickened" out.

Dude had a crappy game, as did almost everyone else on his side of the ball for both teams. The GIF/video of his hesitation certainly "looks" bad, but more than anything else it's just indicative of the MVP having a bad night on a big stage.

I don't really get why people are hyper-analyzing it. I don't think there is much to find.

Looks like he's avoiding #67. #70 also avoided piling on.

I think he was rattled almost the whole game and that led to him making the wrong move in that split second. Whether it was fear of contact or not he still did the exact opposite of what he needed to.

It's ironic that Cam is being mocked today for avoiding contact when it was Manning yesterday that was playing like a little old lady rushing all his throws to avoid getting hit.

If I'm Peyton, I'm too embarrassed to give a postgame presser.

What's your point? Other players are converging on it as he'd be falling on it.

It took more effort for him to halt his move toward the ball than to continue going where he was going. I think it's pretty obvious he was trying to reposition to recover once it came free.

People will see what they want to see in that video. Cam supporters try defend it in some way and Cam haters will try to use it to prove he is an awful teammate, selfish, etc.
