It's all because they were the first to popularize a certain artistic revolution/design.
Pretty simple.
There can only be one first who spawns many imitators. In each of these cases the artist was either the first to debut a certain artistic design never seen before or they were the first artist to make a design popular or critically important.

A master painting is no different than the 1st Ferrari or Corvette to come off an assembly line. The value is in the importance and rarity.

with the car i can enjoy the best of man's intellectual excellence.
