I have traveled and spent a lot of time all over Louisiana and Mississippi, and pretty much everywhere but the coast is the worst part of the south if we're talking about shitty places. Shitty people would be northern panhandle necks. I don't know what it is, but they all have something majorly wrong with them
Mississippi is just filled with the poorest of the poor. It's hard to understand how some of them live. I've been to houses with no running water (sewer), no power, holes big enough to see outside from inside, etc. A lot of people would find it hard to believe, but there are PLENTY of squatters all over Mississippi
Eta: Memphis is easily the worst big city in the south

It's funny so many people saying Chalmette sucks. Because I really hated it there when I worked a project down there. It seemed like half my days began with an old lady wanting to know what was going on, followed by a twenty minute racist rant.
