If any team not wearing purple and gold told you they were going to win the CWS with two starters and a mash-up of relievers, you guys would laugh them straight out of the building.
But when that team happens to be LSU, Mainieri gets flamed.
Good run Tigers! We'll get em' next year.

The problem with your comment is that last statement. We're getting too used to saying it at the end of the season.

Hey look at the bright side we won 1 game in Omaha this year.
Is that postive-tiger enough?
I think PM really sucked it up with the pitching this year at CWS. I Will leave it at that anyway

[quote]Exactly cant win in Omaha with 2 starters....Doesn't matter what reliever he started or when he changed pitchers....We were never going to win that game period....
WRONG! Can't win in in Omaha if you can't score runs, everyone has pitching now days and everyone has very good hitting when they get to Omaha. LSU has had the pitching last few years, what they lack is hitting the ball against better teams, why people can't see this is just crazy!!!

Vanderbilt was getting no hit through 7 innings.. Before finally hitting one solo homer and winning 1-0.. Did their lack of hitting cost them? No because they played their pitching better. We pulled out two best arms today too quickly and missed out on what should have been a competitive game within reach late.. Which actually favors teams like LSU and Vandy.
And this is what separates Mainieri from the Tim Corbins of College Baseball.

No, he means that the baseball team was exposed -- exposed as not being good enough to win it all.
And he's right. This team was never good enough to win it all.

Toward the end of the season...I remember a game where Poche folded, and the Bullpen was brought in and one right after another...and couldn't throw a strike.
Right then, I realized that we wouldn't win the CWS. Gotta have two CONSISTENT starters...and a lockdown Closer to win up there.
On to next year.

Regardless of his handling of the pitchers, its hard to argue we weren't limited on the mound. Outside of Lange and maybe newman for a few innings, there is no one on this staff that could be trusted to shutdown the opponent. I'm sure that's what he means. Person was mediocre. Poche is slightly above average as a pitcher, Godfrey is a freshman who isn't ready, same with Bain, Latz was hurt, and Marshall was a pussy.

The Thursday night game at South Carolina. Blew an early 5-1 lead and lost 10-6.
I kind of had an inkling then, too.

sorry, while a decision or two was questionable, Manieri did not lose that game.
do you think our pitchers that walked 5 batters and gave up 10 hits were his fault?
do you think our hitters allowing their relief pitcher to shut us down (15 straight) was his fault. that's 5 straight innings while we got only one 1,2,3 inning.
I know it's "traditional" that the coach is always at fault but our players lost that game and their players won it.

We could have had the same 15 straight outs too given the right managing.. So?
Whatever. That's the limitation. TCU threw garbage at our batters and we chased ALL OF IT. Our hitters panic in a close game and we are too impatient to work a count and chase a good pitcher. That's how you beat LSU in the postseason. Stony Brook did it. Houston did it. TCU did it.

The guy who retired 13 straight threw 36 pitches.
If you don't think that comes down to sorry coaching you are either stupid or willfully ignorant.

Possibly the worst coaching performance Omaha has ever witnessed.

Oh come fricking on!!! That entire fricking mess was the result of the absolute blunder of a managed game. The worst managed game I have witnessed at any level where a coach gets fricking paid.
Right from the get go..
1) You have a non starter go 1 inning ZERO people even in the bullpen. He waits until the fricking bases are loaded to even get them up.
But the BATS saved us and got us back in it!
2) Newman relieves Person who was left in too long and strikes out 3 in 1.2 inning no runs.. So what does the red man do? He fricking pulls him for Bain.
3) Bain gets through 1 inning due to incredible luck and great plays by AB. So what does CPM do? He keeps him in there. And then it REALLY gets fricked up.. He keeps him in there while he walks two batters and cant remotely find the strike zone which has become non-existent from this ump. So what does he do? He puts in Godfrey with a runner on 2nd and 3rd! Our known wildest pitcher!
4) OK Godfrey was a fricking mess so he puts in Devall who has control and completely shuts them down. What happens next?? Yep YANK HIS arse the next inning for Norman.
5) Devall to Norman actually works. Norman looks like a fricking God on the mound come to save LSU's day. 1 inning pitched 2 strike outs and a fricking highlight reel play. BUT NOOOOO that would be too easy down just 3 runs to go with Norman.. He fricking puts in Stallings for no reason at all !!
So Person struggled because he has only 1 pitch due to not being able to throw a curve for a strike but he replaces the best pitching performance of the night with a guy that LITERALLY has one fricking pitch!
6) All the while LSU still had a CHANCE to get back into the game in the 9th. But instead of going with a PH for guys that even CPM throws under the bus he stays with the lineup! WTF!
But I digress... There was only a "decision or two that was questionable"

Can't he just say he pulled his two best pitchers too soon
My gosh we have stupid frickers in here. Again, he probably should have left Norman in, but the game was over by that time. It's not why we lost. The Newman hook was the right decision, and if you're arguing that you're just exposing yourself.
CPM is dead right. We had a very good team, but when it comes to playing elite competition (and we did not do so this regular season) in the CWS, we had the thinnest of pitching margins. Our bullpen is average, and you don't win the CWS with an average bullpen. Our one chance was complete dominance by Poche and Lange. Anyone who knew anything knew that going in. I knew the World Series was lost the instant that second ball sailed over Chinea's head.
This LSU team was a legit top five team during the season when you're facing mostly average arms. But in the CWS pitching will rule, and there were four teams there with considerably better pitching than us. If you didn't know that going in, then I can understand your frustration now. But it was obvious.

Wait. You think coaching had something to do with Vandy's pitcher throwing a shut out?

I was always a maineri fan despite his negative expressions in the dugout and overall attitude - Seems arrogant - because for the most part he has done well for us. But, there was a game, a few weeks ago, when poche was in, in the 9th, and we were winning and he left him out there when it was obvious that poche was out of gas. I believe against aTm. He visited the mound and I think he left poche in to prove a point to him - thats the feeling i got anyway. I'm no longer a fan of maineri. His game managing skills are horrible, especially when dealing with his pitching staff. His attitude - he looks like a little girl crying in the dugout when something goes wrong - we can do better.
