Dude, have a Snickers.

alking about the past? As you pointed out, this is a results business. Doc beat him head to head this year. Clearly, he outcoached him and is the better coach now.
What is your endgame here? Are you leading the No Gentry No Care cavalry?

Not at all. Said many times he isn't a great hire. I like him the best of all the names we've heard, but that says more about the names than Gentry. That said, I'd be happy with any of the guys we've heard too.
My end game is to get better discussion on this board. The whole idea that I'm on team whatever is asinine. No one here knows what they will do. No one anywhere knows who will end up being a good hire or bad hire.
I want the team to explore all the options they have and find the guy that fits best right now, regardless of experience, age, demeanor, record, etc. I would hope we could look at the coaches the same way here. Doesn't mean you have to like every candidate, but "He coached the Clippers a decade ago. His career record is terrible because he coached the Clippers a decade ago. He is a terrible coach" isn't exactly cogent analysis.

Then why the need to stifle the opinion that Gentry is a mediocre candidate?

That's true, like nobody knows if Monty would have lead this team to multiple titles.

I'm sure Gentry would improve the team in the short term, but I'm not sure he will ever help you win a championship, which has to be the goal with a transcendent talent on the team for the next several seasons. In my opinion, our goals cannot extend past AD's next contract ends. This has to be THE guy.

The Clippers are only one team that he coached. He also coached Phoenix and Detroit. We could make excuses for his poor results at each spot, but the more excuses you make, the further you get from my ideal candidate.

Consider this:
Monty Williams has the same number of playoff appearances in 5 years as Alvin Gentry has in 12.

Food for thought...granted, Gentry was fired from the Pistons 15 years ago...the question is whether or not he has learned anything over the years. To me, this sounds like "great assistant" not "head coach":

quote:
Now, ask me if Alvin knows his stuff, I'll say yes. Ask me if he's a good guy, I'll say he's a wonderful guy. Principled, honest, genial.
quote:
Gentry wanted to coach that way here -- let the star rule, and make sure the machine is well-oiled. But Hill is not that kind of player.
quote:
So Hill deferred to Gentry, as he deferred to Doug Collins before him -- only, unlike Collins, Gentry deferred too much in return. According to Pistons players, Gentry threatened benchings, but rarely followed through. He became the parent, repeating the warning, "If you do that one more time, I'm going to spank you."
quote:
"You could see the little things," said Joe Dumars, the Pistons' new vice president, who struggled personally with the decision to let Gentry go, partly because last year at this time, Dumars was playing for him. "When winnable games are lost, when players' body language slumps, when they lose home games that they absolutely should win -- then you say 'There's a problem going on here.'

Not stifling anything. Just asking for more than "I looked up his record on bref and he sucks."

I understand what you're saying here, but it's not like the guy had a relative short window to coach. He has almost 800 games under his belt. THat's a lot of time to tell if he's worth a shite or not. Two playoff appearances and a losing record while coaching that many games is enough to go on.

I'm not sure what the infatuation with this guy is. Hell, I could be a good coach with the team the Warriors roll out every night. Coaching tip 1- give the ball to Curry, if he's not open give it to Thompson, if he's not open swing it around for another 3. Every so often get it inside to Bogut. If the shot fails, Draymond will get the rebound.
I'm being very sarcastic here, but his record speaks for itself as a head coach. Just because he has the best team in the league doesn't mean anything has changed in his coaching abilities.

Thibs- 5 years as a HC, Playoffs every single year.
We won't ever win a ring with Thibs. He can't win with the talent in Chicago. You expect him to dominate the West? lol

Being told Alvin Gentry is making calls about putting together a staff in New Orleans. Common for both sides to get a sense of that.

What an anti-climatic coaching search.
Going cheap. Again.

I don't know what kind of sources Jordan Schultz has
Posted on 5/21/15 at 10:12 am to hendersonshands
Me neither.
And it could just be common for guys to float out who they get on their staff. Might factor in to the decision making process.
Doesn't mean he has been offered the job or will be.

I'm not sure how serious this is or isn't though. Presumably one of the questions Demps would ask is who would you get to be your assistants. I think it does say he's made the short list, but I know if I was hiring I'd like to know
Gentry + ? vs. JVG + ? vs. Thibs + ? etc.
Posted on 5/21/15 at 10:18 am to TigerinATL
Yeah, that's what I am thinking. Could be one of those situations where he's saying...
"Well, hypothetically, if I got the job, I would want my lead assistant to be _____, etc etc" and then he makes some calls to say "Hypothetically, would you be interested"
And so on.

If Gentry is hired, right or wrong choice, it's isn't because they're "going cheap".

Each team will be getting over $50 million more per year from the new TV deal. Some of that will obviously go to the players but that's a pretty significant influx of revenue so there's no reason for the team to let money determine who the next coach is. However, I do think Demps' contract situation makes committing a lot of money over a long period of time a tricky situation. Maybe it's as simple as getting future GM Dumars' seal of approval on your big money coach, but you want to avoid getting back on the backwards Coach -> GM track we just jumped off of.
Posted on 5/21/15 at 10:41 am to TigerinATL
I really hope we do not settle for Gentry. We can have basically anyone we want. If we settle for Gentry, it shows me that Demps is more concerned about his own power than getting the best coach available.
