Just as something to chew on, I would invite each of you to rewatch Don's Hershey speech from the end of Season 6:
LINK
After you see it, Don's empathy for Leonard and the refrigerator story is pretty understandable.
For the record - after seeing this, I don't see Don creating the Coke ad. To me, at least, it's more of an ironic statement on how advertising and corporations are able to quickly identify and monetize just about anything that's meaningful to people.
Nevertheless, it's pretty obvious Weiner wanted to create controversy about the final shot. Kudos to him for accomplishing that.

The moment they mentioned Coca Cola to Don a few eps back and knowing the time frame, I wondered if "the ad" was gonna play into the show before it was over.

Yep- had the same thought. I thought it was a great ending. Very befitting of the spirit of the show.

Great finale. No issue with having basically a fairytale ending for all of the main characters except Betty and maybe Sally.
I thought Elisabeth Moss had the best performance in the finale.

I think the way Weiner ended the show, your view is just as valid as anyone elses's.
I just can't get past Stan saying a bit earlier to Peggy "Don't worry about Don. Don ALWAYS comes back."
I think that was a bit of a tell. And I think Stan was right.

She did well except for portions of the phone call with Don, where her acting slipped just a bit IMO.

and Don told Peggy on the phone that he would see her soon before he hung up

After rewatching the final scene, its pretty clear that Don returns to advertising. The smile that comes over his face is more of a smirk than anything else and just as he smiles, you hear the zen bell ring....which is the perfect sound to symbolize the lightbulb going off in his head.
As someone said earlier, you can practically hear Don's pitch for that ad. It would've been brilliant.
The finale sucks if you just take it at face value and think Don is now some new age yoga instructor in California.

And the words by the instructor before they began to meditate, "...new ideas, a new you.."
For me Don definitely goes back to advertising and makes that Coke ad. The only thing I would consider ambiguous about the ending for Don is what type of "new" life he will have outside of work, like the conversation Peggy and Stan had about there is more to life than work.

The only ambiguous thing is whether Don actually changes for the better and is now a good father, faithful, all that crap.
I don't see how that ending can leave any doubt that Don goes back to advertising.

It would be great if they release a 15 min sketch of him pitching it to Coca-cola.
I want to see this too.

He tells everyone that. Told Betty that. He has no idea what he's going to do and really has no idea to Betty's time frame. Also when talking to Peggy he IS suicidal. Has his moment in the session afterward.
Peggy/Olsen is great in the phone scenes. The Stan call is great acting. She goes through a range of emotions seamlessly.
Also, where do they find all these people? The "Leonard" character? Just one scene. Never seen that actor before and they give him a huge scene. Just a random guy and random actor. Great performance in a major scene at the end of (arguably) the GOAT TV drama. And he nails it. The blubbering through embarrassed laughter was awesome. Totally believable.

Is it me or does the Leonard character at the end look like this guy?

I said it last night...Role of a lifetime for the guy who got the Leonard part. He has more face time than anyone else in the last 5 minutes of a legendary show.

It was a perfect ending. He definitely made the ad. If you are 40 or older you know and understand why this was the ONLY ending.
He's a survivor. He took the one thing in the world that was supposed to be an authentic rebellion against modern culture and commercialism and turned it into a Coke ad. It's a statement about modern consumer society. Nothing is real and everyone and everything has a price to surrender their authenticity.
It's the most Don Draper thing Don Draper ever did. EVER.

Yup. First time this is mentioned and I was going to post this. Doesn't he also say "he is a survivor".
Don 100% did the ad.
I'm torn on Sally. Does she end up sacrificing her obviously independent/intelligent nature for raising family the way Betty did?
Or does she go on to the beat of her own drum with the help of Don/aunt/uncle?
I'm leaning on the former, but I think Betty making it clear she beats to her own drum was significant.
BTW I kinda hated the whole Richard character, it was somewhat pointless. I guess to emphasize Joan as a whole but still, pretty much hated him. Maybe I'm still pissed about Double Jeopardy.
Roger's lines were awesome as usual. LMAO during the "getting married seen" about it being Megan's mother.
Stan is awesome, hard not to love that guy.
